Apostolic Nuncio warns against monetizing Pope’s visit to Cameroon.

Archbishop José Avelino Bettencourt,

The Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, Archbishop José Avelino Bettencourt, has denounced moves by certain individuals to monetize the Pope’s visit to Cameroon.

His Grace Bettencourt issued the clarification in a recent statement as preparations intensify for the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Cameroon from April 15 to 18.

The man of God described reports indicating that Papal liturgical celebrations could be made easier through a ticketing system costing certain amounts of money as fake.

The Apostolic Nuncio clarified that all liturgical celebrations to be presided by the Holy Father during his visit particularly in Yaounde, Bamenda and Douala, will be entirely free of charge.

The prelate stressed that no tickets or reserved seats will be required for the faithful wishing to attend the papal masses.

“The access to a Mass has never been paid,” the Apostolic Nuncio firmly stated, while describing a poster that has been circulating online as scandalous and contrary to the Church’s pastoral and ecclesiastical approach.

He further urged church authorities and the public to disregard the information and avoid falling victim to scam activities.

The Apostolic Nuncio encouraged faithful, Christian communities and religious groups to prioritise spiritual preparation through prayer, catechesis, liturgical celebrations, moments of worship and reconciliation.

The warning, it should be said, comes after a poster went viral online, advertising paid access to the various masses that the Pontiff will celebrate during his stay in the country.

According to the Apostolic Nuncio, the poster is false and has no connection whatsoever with the Catholic Church.

He advised faithful and members of the public not to be deceived by private initiatives attempting to monetize entry to papal celebrations. The Apostolic Nuncio insisted that any attempt to sell access to religious gatherings is fraudulent.
