The late Rick Nguti

The music industry in Cameroon is mourning the death of legendary Bottle Dance musician, Richard Nguti, who was popularly known as Rick Nguti.

His family confirmed that he passed away on February 20, 2026, in the United States of America, USA, where he had been residing for several years.

The native of Alahnki in Mankon, Mezam Division, in the North West Region, who was also known as Ngia Richard, rose to national prominence in the early 2000s, with his landmark album, Stop AIDS.

The song later became an anthem in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the country. Rick Nguti, according to many who knew him, used Bottle Dance rhythms to convey social messages at a time HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns were gaining momentum in the country.

The album not only earned him widespread recognition but also helped popularise Bottle Dance music beyond its traditional settings, as it inspired a new generation of artists to blend indigenous sounds with contemporary themes.

According to family sources, the veteran artiste died in Ohio, surrounded by loved ones, including his daughter, Ophilia Wanangu Nguti.

A statement issued on behalf of the Nguti family described him as a devoted father, grandfather, husband, and cultural icon whose contribution to Bottle Dance music will remain unforgettable.

The family, in the message, equally called on fans and well-wishers to keep them in their prayers during this period of grief. They added that further details on funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

Although Rick Nguti later relocated to the United States and did not release any new musical works in recent years, his songs remained deeply rooted in the daily life of many households, particularly in Bamenda and other parts of the North West Region, where his music continues to feature prominently at weddings, traditional ceremonies, and community celebrations.
