Mbouda: Firefighters recover lifeless body of man from well.

Rescues team deployed at the scene

Firefighters of the 502nd Firefighting Unit in Bafoussam have retrieved the body of a man said to have fallen into a well under clear circumstances.

The discovery is reported to have been made January 23, in the Bamissingue neighbourhood of Mbouda in the West Region.



The operation was carried out following an alert from local residents who reported that a man had fallen into the well.

The rescue team in respond rushed to the scene and immediately set up a safety and extraction system to enable one of their officers to descend into the well.

According to a statement from the firefighters, once the rescuer reached the bottom of the well, he made a grim discovery. 

“At the bottom of the well, the rescuer realised that it was the skeleton of a man estimated to be in his forties. The remains were then carefully removed from the well and left at the disposal of the competent authorities,” the fire service reported.

The report further detailed that the smooth execution of the operation helped to prevent further risks of contamination in the area.

Residents of the Bamissingue neighbourhood are quoted as having expressed shock and sadness following the discovery expressed shock and sadness at the discovery, regretting that the well is located in a residential area frequently used by members of the community.

Authorities are said to have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death. It remains unclear how long the body had been in the well and whether the incident was the result of an accident or suicide. 

Local officials have urged residents to take precautionary measures by properly covering wells and reporting any dangerous structures that could pose a risk to the population.
