To meet growing energy transition challenges: Stakeholders concert to revive Cameroon Gas Association.

National gas industry stakeholders immortalise consultation meeting in Y’de

Key stakeholders in the national gas industry have concerted and mapped out strategies to relaunch the activities of the Cameroon Gas Association, CGA, which have been dormant since 2009.

This was focus of a consultation meeting held in Yaounde yesterday. It was convened by the Executive General Manager of the National Hydrocarbons Corporation, SNH, who doubles as Chairman of the Board of the Cameroon Gas Association, Minister Adolphe Moudiki.

It brought together representatives of companies and institutions in the gas exploration, production and distribution chain.

The Adviser No.1 at SNH, Ndozeng Magloire, opened the consultation meeting on behalf of SNH Executive General Manager and Board Chairman of Cameroon Gas Association.

In his remarks, Ndozeng Magloire, on behalf of SNH boss, said the consultation to relaunch the activities of the association is “part of a collective reconstruction process”, necessitated by growing national and global energy challenges, major geopolitical changes, and an energy transition that is forcing all countries to rethink their policies.

“Today, natural gas appears more than ever, to be an energy source of the future, a lever for competitiveness, environmental sustainability, and energy sovereignty. Many countries are investing heavily to ensure their security in this area and accelerate the transition to a more balanced energy mix. Cameroon, with its rich gas resources and the expertise of its partners, cannot remain on the sidelines of this global dynamic,” Ndozeng stated.

This, he added, is why the relaunch of the CGA “is an absolute necessity” which “will help bring together the efforts of public and private actors, stimulate innovation, and strengthen the place of gas in our economy”.

The relaunch of the Association, he further detailed, “will also provide a credible platform to support reforms, promote best practices, defend the interests of the profession, and attract new investment”.

The putting in place of a legal framework that regulates the sector with promulgation of a law in 2012 on Gas Code and the decree on its text of application, which adds to that on Petroleum Code that had already been in place since 1999, gives the Association “all the necessary tools to effectively operate” by relaunching it activities.

He said the consultation also aims to confirm the membership of the founding members still active, broaden the membership base to include new potential sector players, prepare for an elective General Assembly to renew the Association's governing bodies, and to set up standing committees capable of working effectively on the major projects that lie ahead.

Harping further on broadening of membership, he urged all upstream companies and others involved particularly in the distribution of gas and oil products join the Association.

Hails participants for concrete proposals

Closing the deliberations, Ndozeng on behalf of SNH boss, hailed participants for their rich and constructive proposals for the relaunch of the Association.

He said the deliberations also reaffirm their commitment to “having a unifying framework capable of promoting and defending the interests of the sector in a global context marked by major energy and environmental challenges”.

“Together, we have reiterated the importance of natural gas as a transitional energy source and a source of sovereignty, and recognized the need for concerted action to fully exploit our country's potential in this area,” he said.

He said the outlined priority actions includes confirming the membership of the Association's founding members, encouraging new members and partners to join, rigorously preparing for the next elective General Assembly to revitalize the Association’s governance and setting up of standing committees to carry out discussions and concrete projects.

“These resolutions are a sign of collective commitment and mark a decisive step towards the rebirth of the Association,” he declared.

While reiterating that success of the project is a shared responsibility and a tremendous opportunity for Cameroon, Ndozeng reaffirmed SNH’s full commitment to support the Association to achieve its objectives.
