Tennis: Cameroon wins gold at Billie Jean King Cup in Rwanda.

Cameroon Tennis lionesses and trainers

Cameroon’s women’s national tennis team has etched its name in history after clinching its first-ever gold medal at the Billie Jean King Cup– Zone 4, held in Kigali, Rwanda.

In a thrilling final against Togo on Saturday, July 19, the Lionesses emerged victorious with a 2-1 win, marking a major milestone for Cameroonian tennis.

To celebrate the unprecedented success, the Cameroonian Tennis Federation, FECATENNIS, hosted an official press conference Tuesday, July 22. The press conference was held at the Tennis Club of Bonanjo, Douala I Subdivision.

The federation officials disclosed that the presser was organise to unveil strides of the tennis Lionesses to the general public and solicit more public investments to the sport.

It should be noted that, the gold medal win propels Cameroon into Zone 3 of the competition, moving the nation a step closer to the global stage of women’s tennis.

The victory was not only a display of athletic excellence but also a moment of national pride, with Cameroon’s anthem echoing in Kigali—a powerful symbol of unity and determination.

Speaking to reporters, Maurice Feuze, President of the Littoral Regional Tennis League and representative of the President of FECATENNIS said, he has always known that the country’s female tennis team will fly the flag of Cameroon high internationally.

He has called on public stakeholders to put in more interest in the sport, so as to see that the athletes have appropriate training grounds in major cities that will help boost their career and performance in subsequent leagues

As they look forward to more complicated competitions, the national trainer, Joseph Edzoa, said the team is expected to face stronger opponents like those from Arab nations with sophisticated sport infrastructure than Cameroon.

"It not time to sleep on this victory. We need to put in more work… we need to maintain the standard in order not to be relegated to zone 4" he said, adding that " it will be better to maintain this momentum”.

Edzoa said, when the team members came for training, he was sure of their performance.

The Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup, it should be said, is named after American tennis legend, Billie Jean King.

The tournament is played in groups, based on the international rankings of participating countries.

This year’s edition marked the third consecutive year that Rwanda hosted the tournament, having made its debut appearance in 2021 when the national team traveled to Lithuania

Participating countries for the 2025 edition in Group IV included Benin, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Senegal, Chad, Sudan, Togo, Tanzania, and hosts Rwanda.

Before the tournament began, a draw was held in Kigali to pool the 12 nations into two groups, one of which consisted of six teams.

Each national team included four players.

On match day, teams face off in three matches—two singles and one doubles.

Each match is worth one point, and the team that wins two out of the three matches is declared the overall winner of the tie.
