The Mayor of Ndu Council, Abdou Kanfon Borno, has revealed that the 40 million FCFA prize won by his municipality, during the 2025 National Clean City Contest, will be dedicated to development projects.

He made the announcement in Bamenda on July 14, 2025.

This was during the opening of the North West Regional Assembly’s June 2025 Ordinary Session.

Mayor Kanfon Borno equally used the opportunity to present the prize to the Regional Assembly and the Governor of the North West Region, Adolphe Lele Lafrique.

Speaking to the press after presenting the award to the Region’s authorities, Mayor Kanfon Borno expressed excitement that Ndu Council, which represented the North West Region at this year's national contest, emerged overall seventh.

“We are extremely happy because our efforts did not go in vain,” Mayor Kanfon Borno noted, while commending the entire community for their joint collaborative efforts. He further elaborated on the efforts undertaken by the Ndu Council.

“We mobilised the population of Ndu municipality using the neighborhood and village committees that we created. We worked together with the Fons and the other village development associations to make sure that all the villages were kept clean,” the Mayor stated.

He added that all these efforts have particularly kept the town of Ndu clean to this day.

Mayor Kanfon Borno also took the opportunity to call on the population of Ndu to continue to be peace-abiding and to continue to collaborate with the Council, so they can continue to make great achievements for the municipality, the North West Region, and the country.

“Our secret was just collaboration,” he stated.

Providing details on how the prize money would be used, Mayor Kanfon Borno explained that the council will organise a meeting with the Presidents of village committees and the neighbourhood committee to identify suitable projects for the prize money.

“It's already a plus for us because we know that next year, we already have one project…,” the Mayor concluded.

About Clean City contest

It is worth recalling that the prize announcement was made during a ceremony commemorating the 39th edition of World Habitat Day in Bafoussam recently.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Célestine Ketcha Courtès, representing the Head of State, revealed the contest results.

In her keynote address, Minister Ketcha Courtès commended the dedication of local councils and communities in promoting hygiene and environmental responsibility.

The ceremony was attended by a diverse group, including the Governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustine, elected officials, international partners, urban development experts, and civil society leaders.

The event marked the culmination of a week-long series of activities organised across the West Region aimed at promoting sustainable housing and improved urban planning.

These activities included public clean-up campaigns, community dialogues, workshops with urban planners, and exhibitions showcasing eco-friendly building innovations.

World Habitat Day, established by the United Nations, serves as an annual platform to reflect on the state of cities and the fundamental right to adequate shelter. This year's national observance emphasised inclusive urban development, resilience to climate change, and enhanced service delivery at the local level.
