At SAGO 2025: Prof Noel Essomba says Yaounde General Hospital becoming reference in Central Africa.

The Director of the Yaounde General Hospital, Professor Noel Emmanuel Essomba has said the health facility is becoming a reference not only in Cameroon but in the Central African subregion.

He made the declaration on Wednesday July 2, while addressing health stakeholders and visitors during a conference at the 14th edition of the Government Action Fair, SAGO, at the Yaounde City Council premises.



He was accompanied during the session by Prof Jean Dupont Kemfang Ngowa, Head of Gyneco-Obstetrics at the hospital and Dr Amailia Owona, Medical Director and in charge of research.

In his presentation on the theme: “Yaounde General Hospital, proof of growth of public service,” Prof Emmanuel Essomba said the institution, which has been in existence for close to four decades, is not only well equipped but has the necessary human resources to provide quality health care and at affordable cost to patients.

Presenting indicators of growth, which he stated are in view of ameliorating public service, the Director General of the Yaounde General Hospital said the hospital, which today boast of a standard and high-level technical platform, has been become a centre for kidney transplant, cardiac and orthopaedic surgeries as well as heart stimulation.

“Few years ago, some of these surgeries and intervention were only carried out during campaigns with the support of medical teams from abroad but today, we’re proud to tell Cameroonians that these all these are done by local teams,” the Director General said. 

According to him, “It’s the fruit of the vision of the Head of State and the Minister of Public Health, that pays attention to excellence, performance and humanisation of public service,”.

On the motivation to take part in the Government Action Fair, given that it is the first time the Yaounde General Hospital is participating in the fair, Prof Emmanuel Essomba said: “We are coming here to reinforce communication on efforts put in place by government to boosts services in health facilities; reduce medical evacuations abroad and more importantly to position the Yaounde General Hospital as a hub in the subregion in terms of quality healthcare,”.

Prof Essomba also mentioned that the hospital is equipped with 40 haemodialysis machines and within the framework of the Universal Health Coverage, patients suffering from chronical renal insufficiencies pay 15,000 FCFA a year as compared to 520,000 FCA which they paid few years ago.

This, he said, is proof of palpable gov’t action and also indicative of the role the Yaounde General Hospital is paying in this light.  

Prof Emmanuel Essomba mentioned ongoing construction and renovation works, in order to continue to modernise its infrastructure, thereby providing optimal conditions for personnel and patients undergoing treatment.

The Minister of Communication, Rene Emmanuel Sadi who officially opened SAGO 2025 on behalf of the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute, visited the stand of the Yaounde General Hospital set up at the fair ground.

Professor Noël Emmanuel ESSOMBA, who received the Prime Minister’s representative at the stand, briefed him about the care provided at this first-class healthcare facility, based on the values ​​of excellence, empathy, and modernism.

Commending their efforts, the government representative recommended that the management of the health facility, continue to pursue this approach, in order to provide quality care to the population at affordable cost.

Since the fair officially kicked off on Monday June 30, the 50 m² stand of the Yaounde General Hospital, located at the main entrance of SAGO 2025, has been offering free consultations and screenings to the public. 

The health facility also deployed two new, fully medicalised ambulances to the site to respond in the event of a life-threatening emergency.

With an average of 350 visitors and more than 150 consultations and screenings per day, the Yaounde General Hospital, which has more than 120 general practitioner physicians and specialists, is committed to responding, at all times, to the needs of the public.

The Yaounde General Hospital is participating for the first time in this major gathering. The Government Action Fair is scheduled to wrap up tomorrow July 5.
