Unisport, Aigle secure Elite One promotion.

Unisport was relegated from the topflight championship in 2019

West Region teams, Aigle Football Club of Menoua and Unisport of Bafang, have gained promotion to the national first division football championship.

The clubs secured promotion to the MTN Elite One competition after securing comfortable results during the fifth and sixth days of matches in the ongoing promotion playoff phase of the 2024/2025 second division football championship competition, the MTN Elite Two.

The matches took place in Douala in the Littoral Region where the eight-team promotion playoff series has been unfolding since the start of this month.

Unisport secured its ticket after registering a hard-earned 1-0 victory over South Region outfit, Atlantic Sports Academy of Kribi.

The team’s star player, Frank Assiga Edoa, powered his nineth goal of the series to hand the team the slim win in the fixture which took place at the Mbappe Leppe Stadium.

The victory topped Unisport’s tally to 15points. The point count had the Bafang-based side joining regional sister team, Aigle of Menoua, in creating an uncoverable point gap in front of the six other teams that entered the promotion race.

Unisport’s qualification sees the club marking a return to the topflight championship after spending over five years in the second division competition.

Unisport was relegated from the Elite One at the end of the 2018/2019 campaign after registering a bottom-place finish at the end of the relegation playoff series of the event.

Unisport won the Elite One championship in 1996, three years after coming through as vice champions in 1993. The outfit secured the Cup of Cameroon trophy in 2012 and were runners up in the 2002, 2005 and 2011 editions of the national challenge cup competition.

Aigle riding in similar comfort

Aigle Menoua bagged its qualification mid last week following a 2-1 win over Unisport.

The win over Unisport had the club climbing to a point tally of 15points in five matches after the outfit’s run of five wins in all its five matches in the series.

The club followed up the performance over the sister team with a more comfortable thumping 4-0 victory over five time Elite One champions, Tonnerre Kalara Club of Yaounde with forward, Eden Creol Ymele powering in a hat trick.

The victory moved the club to a point count of 18points in six matches pending its final game of the series against struggling North West Region team, Ngoketunjia United Football Academy this Monday.

Aigle was demoted to the second division last year at the end of the 2023/2024 Elite One championship. The Menoua Division team has been one of Cameroon’s most popular teams in the last two decades.

The team came through as vice champions of the Elite One championship at the close of the 2004/2005 campaign. The side reached the final of the football cup of Cameroon in 2008.
