Elite One promotion race: End of the road for Bafmeng United, Ngoketunjia FC.

Bafmeng United

North West Region football clubs, Bafmeng United Football Academy, and Ngoketunjia FC have seen their MTN Elite One promotion hopes slip away.

The duo suffered a setback after suffering damaging defeats during matchday four of the MTN Elite Two Playoffs.

The matches were played on Sunday June 22. The defeats meant Bafmeng United and Ngoketunjia FC, who had nursed ambitions at the start of their campaign, cannot qualify for the Elite One championship with three games remaining.

The teams could not secure the necessary wins to stay in contention for a spot in the top tier league next season.

Even if both clubs win their remaining matches, it will be insufficient in their promotion bid.

Bafmeng United were humBafmeng United bled 2-0 by current leaders, Unisport of Haut Nkam at the Mbappe Leppe Stadium.

It was the third defeat of Bafmeng United in the on-going eight nations tournament.

The team opened their quest for promotion to the Elite One with a slim 1-0 win over Avion Academy on June 12 and also lost to Aigle 4-1.

They picked up their lone point from the tournament in a 1-1 draw with Atlantic SA on matchday two. Bafmeng United sits sixth on the table with one point.

It is the second time in a row that Bafmeng United have qualified for the MTN Elite Two Playoffs after an impressive regular season but failed to make their mark. They suffered the same fate in last season in similar fashion.

Ngoketunjia FC falls short again

Ngoketunjia FC were determined to end their winless run but suffered another familiar feeling of defeat in the Elite Two Playoffs Up tournament.

The team narrowly lost to Atlantic Club 1-0 in what fans of the club have described as a highly controversial game.

Ngoketunjia protested against poor officiating over a disputed goal. According to players, the ball did not cross the line. The referee initially continued play, but the assistant referee's flag signaled a goal, which was awarded to Atlantic.

The defeat was the third for Ngoketunjia FC in the competition. They lost to Tonnerre Kalara Club by a similar scoreline and were humiliated 4-0 against Unisport. They drew against Eding Sport in their opening game.

Ngoketunjia FC are 7th of the eight-club classification table. They have one point from four games. Unisport of Haut Nkam on their part continued their perfect run in the MTN Elite Two Playoffs Up.

The club of the West Region have won their four matches in the competition. They are still to concede. They continue to lead the table with 12 points.

Revisiting other games

In the other games, Aigle continued their winning run in the competition. They defeated Eding Sport 3-2 in a highly entertaining game.

Mistro Yamdjeu scored a brace while Eden Creol Ymele was also on target for Aigle while Alfred Akamba and Mani were on the scoresheet for Eding Sport.

The win also means Aigle continue their push towards a return to the Elite One.

They are second on the logs with 12 points.

Avion picked up a slim 1-0 win over Tonnerre Kalara Club, TKC. Avion is now levied on six points with TKC and sit fifth.
