Projects earmarked to be realised by the North West Regional Assembly in the 2024 fiscal year have come under scrutiny by members of the institutions.

This was during the 15th session of the Regional Assembly which took place in Bamenda on July 22 and 23, 2024.

The session was organised on the theme: “2024 Mid-year Performance and 2025 Budget Orientation Session”.

It was focused on laying ground for more projects to be realised, the evaluation of ongoing Peace and Development Initiative and Public Investment Projects.

The June session was chaired by the President of the Regional Assembly, Prof Fru Angwafo III, in the presence of Governor Adolphe Lele L’Afrique, in his capacity as representative of the State

According to Professor Fru Angwafo III, the session was also aimed at examining overall key projects of the institution and its commitments, as the mandate of the executive fade outs.

It was revealed during the session that as at July 2024, several projects with funding from the institution had been completed, meanwhile some are still going on in all seven divisions of the region.

Some of the completed projects include the construction of science laboratories at GHS Sabongari in Donga-Mantung and GBHS Ndop, construction of a block of three classrooms at GSS Dumbo-Berabe.

Also, four classrooms at GSS Ise and six others at GHS Bafmeng, all in Menchum, were rehabilitated.

The projects which are still being realised are the construction of the North West Regional Assembly building and Guest House in Bamenda, construction of emergency centres at the Bamenda Regional Hospital and at the Nkambe Regional hospital annex.

Speaking to the press, Prof Angwafo III, said: “…we had a successful session on the project debate. A list of projects that came from the community, some from services in the devolved sectors. Those that matured those that are to be matured. And between the sessions we urge all and sundry to consult the communities so that we have properly matured and structured projects for 2025”.

Other key activities during the session included capacity building on psychosocial care and chronic trauma management as well as training on national languages as vehicles of development.

Addressing the general assembly, Governor Adolphe Lele L’Afrique hailed members of the Regional Executive Council for recording tremendous success in various communities through the Peace and Development Initiative, PDI project.

While saluting the population and security forces for their collaboration in bringing back peace in the region, the government official also tasked them to support the North West Development Investment Fund, which to him, is an important initiative to drive socio-economic development in the region.

He presented the investment fund, an initiative of the Regional Assembly, as an important plan for the socioeconomic development of the region, whose strong point is equally citizen participation.

“I use this opportunity to implore all patriotic sons and daughters of this region, village development associations as well as other corporate bodies and legal persons in the region to appropriate this flagship programme,” Governor Adolphe Lele said.

Budget adjustments

Apart from the state of execution of projects, there were equally deliberations and adoption of proposals on the 2024 budget adjustment. This, owing to the fact that Regional Assembly received additional funds from a number of government ministries.

The funds are said to have come from Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, and Secondary Education and are destined for road maintenance, contribution to urban land use and aid to physically and mentally challenged in inclusive learning schools respectively.

The budget was adjusted from over 5.6 billion FCFA to over 6 billion FCFA. The 15th session of the North West Region Assembly also had in attendance Members of Parliament, Senators, Mayors, the Public Independent Conciliator and other personalities.
