At governors’ confab in Yde: Awa Fonka salutes dev’t, security, social climate of West Region.

The Governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustine, has expressed satisfaction over development, security and social climate of his area of command.

The celebrated super scale civil administrator was speaking Monday July 17. This was at the start of the first bi-annual conference of regional governors in Yaounde.

The confab held under the theme: “Security challenges against the backdrop of serious crimes and drug trafficking in schools”.

Speaking to reporters, Governor Awa Fonka, said on a general note, the West Region is doing well, but for the increase in fuel prices that automatically has an impact on the population with some prize hikes.

“Globally on the positive side, roads are being constructed, especially the most talked about Babadjou-Matazem road, which we are sure will be completed by December 2023,” he said. He added that “the economic basin around Foumban and Dschang equally, is under construction as well as other urban roads”.

The award-winning administrator added that there are a good number of investment projects ongoing in the region, through the intervention of elite and the government. This, he said, is a thing of joy to the population of the West Region.

In the health sector, the population the governor further said, responded favourably to the last vaccination exercise against measles and rubella. He expressed delight in the change of attitude by the population towards vaccination.

Sports, he boasted, cannot be left out as Fovu of Baham, will represent the West Region during the final of the Cup of Cameroon while Volcan Football Club of the Noun Division is representing West Region at the National Interpools.

At the cultural level, he expressed joy that “our cultural activities have resumed. Globally, the dynamic population of the West Region is on and remains focus towards development”.

Commenting on the fight against the consumption of hard drugs in schools, Governor Awa Fonka noted that: “Dispositions have been put in place, several security services have been instituted around schools, and there are a good number of addicts that have been arrested as well as robbers”.

Some suspects, he added, were caught red-handed struggling to sell drugs to students. Several police and gendarmerie units, the governor also said, have been opened around schools while those in charge are doing a great job. 

“End-of-year examinations went on hitch-free and results are gradually being released,” the level-headed Governor Awa Fonka said. 

 

Dealing with issue of Indian hemp cultivation

The fight against the cultivation and consumption of Indian hemp, the governor added, has been a major battle in the region, especially in the Menoua, Bamboutos and Noun Divisions.

“The Noun Division has become an avenue where those involved in the cultivation of drugs within and out of the division, especially those coming from Bui Division, have been using the track. This has been quite a big issue for us. However, a good number of Indian hemp traffickers have apprehended,” Awa Fonka detailed.

According to the revered civil administrator, there have been a good number of operations. Through such operations, he said, crackdowns have been carried out in neighbourhoods and localities where drugs are cultivated.
