Buea: One person killed, four cars burnt in suspected Amba attack.

Denizens of Mile 16, a locality in Buea Subdivision, Fako Division of the South West Region, got up yesterday morning amidst pandemonium, after suspected separatist fighters scared the population with gunshots after burning four cars.

The burnt cars were parked in front of a popular drinking spot in Mile 16 frequented by many denizens of the area and other parts of Buea.

One of the persons caught up in the attack lost his life after sustaining injuries. He is said to have lost a lot of blood after he was injured with nobody to help as the population was scared by the shooting.

The victim, a butcher resident in Mile 16, was going to supply meat to his customers. Upon hearing the gunshots, he attempted to run, but was shot by the gunmen. The gunshots, according to denizens, started very early.

"The gunshots started very early in the morning and lasted about 30 minutes, between 5:00 a.m. and 5:30a.m. We don't know who was firing the shots," explained Nathalie Njuma, a resident of Mile 16.

Speaking to The Guardian Post, Nji Lucas, a human rights advocate based in Mile 16, pointed accusing fingers at separatist fighters. The car owners, according to him, were accused by the attackers of being habitual violators of ghost town imposed by separatists.

"Gunshots started on Friday and Sunday in different parts of Mile 16. Four cars were burnt around the Mile16 Market which traders had been accused of violating operation ghost town in the area. The action was carried out by members of the non-state armed groups," Nji said.

The human rights advocate condemned the attack by separatists, saying it was a violation of their rights and freedoms as free citizens of Cameroon.

"I condemn this act because it violates the owners' rights. One person died from injuries at the hospital, after he had lost a lot of blood because he did not have anyone to assist him with his injuries," he noted.

The recent attack and scare by separatist fighters in Mile 16, Buea, follows a period of relative calm in the same neighborhood. Most of the residents expressed frustrations with the recent turn of events concerning security in the area.

Others expressed apprehension at the fact that government forces manning a control post few metres from the incident did not intervene to calm the situation, even though the shooting lasted 30 minutes.

The incident follows a similar event in Mile 16 where the corpse of an elderly person was discovered in a stream in the same area. The corpse has been deposited at the Buea Regional Hospital annex mortuary pending investigations and burial.
