Former Victoria United, Bamboutos coach, Gerard Mbimi, dies.

Iconic Cameroon football coach, Gerard Theophile Mbimi, has died at the age of 77. The renowned gaffer passed away February 18 after a protracted illness, reports say.

Sources say prior to his demise, the tactician had been on a pause, without managing any club for the meantime, principally due to his health crisis.

Gerard Mbimi has a wealth of experience in the Cameroon domestic championship.

He is listed among the most respected for his contribution to the growth of football in Cameroon. Besides his tactical genius, Gerard Mbimi has been a fervent supporter of youth football and its development.

A good number of the country’s most prolific players, have tapped from his superlative coaching. Mbimi has managed at least 18 clubs in the country from the regional, divisional and elite levels during a 24-year-old glittering coaching career.

Gerard Mbimi coached Mount Cameroon FC, Aigle of Nkongsamba, Union Sportive of Douala, Bamboutos FC of Mbouda, Njallaquan Sport Academy, NQSA.

He last big catch was in 2019 when he took over at New Stars of Douala. He recorded several achievements in his blistering coaching career. He led New Stars to the third and final round of the CAF Confederation Cup during the 2018/2019 season.

Gerard Mbimi has also earned a reputation in the South West region where he was in charge of several clubs. He was once appointed head coach of the then flourishing Mount Cameroon FC, Victoria United and Njalla Quan Sport Academy.

His exploits with these clubs, it is reported, sometimes took him closer to an elusive Cameroon national team job. Mbimi was once shortlisted for the post of head coach of the Cameroon men’s senior national team alongside 77 others. He was one of those poised to replace Hugo Broos, who led Cameroon to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, win in Gabon.

The death of Gerard Theophile Mbimi came at a time when another former coach, Gweha Ikouam was laid to rest. Ikouam was deputy head coach of the men’s national football team, died in a tragic car crash on January 21. He died at the age of 61.
