National Assembly: House Speaker installs committee to oversee Hotel des Députés extension.

It emerged from the installation that the proposed facility will have about 12 storeys and more than 150 rooms. It will also contain restaurants, banquet halls, a modern kitchen, guest rooms and presidential suites. 

The Beijing Urban Construction Group, BUCG, which constructed the Paul Biya Glass House, was assigned to examine the proposed extension. After visiting the site three months ago, the company confirmed that the project was feasible.

According to project officials, initial plans cover a surface area of approximately 4,200 square metres, including a built-up area of about 2,700 square metres. The project, it was said, remains at the conceptual stage. 

The newly installed committee will work with engineers and other specialists to develop the initial proposals into a technically feasible and sustainable project. The completed plan will be submitted to the Bureau of the National Assembly for consideration.

Committee to monitor costs, standards

Speaking to reporters after visiting the project site, Hon Njingum Musa Mbutoh, Questor of the National Assembly and Deputy Coordinator of the committee, said the body would monitor the construction process, expenditure and the quality of materials used.

“We will work in the same spirit to make sure that this structure earns its place in the nation,” Hon Njingum said.

The committee operates under the general supervision of the House Speaker. It is coordinated by Hon Théophile Baoro, Vice-President of the National Assembly. 

Other members include Hons Céline Atangana Aligui, Cabral Libii, Albert Kouinche and Gerald Ngalla. 

The Clerk of the National Assembly, André Noël Essian, and the Director of the Speaker’s Cabinet, Prof Isaac Tamba, are also members. 

Administrative, financial and technical secretaries have equally been appointed to assist the committee in carrying out its responsibilities.

Built in 1952, the existing Hotel des Députés has undergone several renovations. However, the National Assembly said the building is now considered outdated. 

During the installation ceremony, the Speaker called for a modern and technologically advanced facility. He said the existing building should be preserved and incorporated into the planned extension through suitable construction solutions.

According to authorities, the project is intended to provide accommodation that meets the requirements of a modern parliamentary institution. It is also expected to complement the Paul Biya Glass House and improve the living conditions of Members of Parliament.

The National Assembly explained that the committee will now refine the proposals, identify financing options and ensure compliance with construction standards and deadlines. 

Its roadmap is expected to be outlined before work begins. The installation proceedings ended with a visit by the Speaker and committee members to the proposed project site.
