Journalist, Smart Njikang, wins Best Pidgin newscaster award again.

Smart Njikang alias Ambassador, brandishing award

Ace journalist, Smart Njikang Gabriel, popularly known as Ambassador, has been honoured with a prestigious award for his professionalism in pidgin news broadcast.

He was crowned Best Pidgin Newscaster of the Year, at the prestigious Golden Award Night on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Douala.

The colourful ceremony brought together captains of industries, administrative authorities, traditional rulers, entertainers and media personalities from across the country.

At the end of the ceremony, Ambassador emerged as one of the most celebrated winners of the night. According to the jury of the Golden Awards, the winners of the award were selected based on a thorough background check conducted on all nominees.

The jury further said at the end of the rigorous vetting process, Njikang stood tall above other nominees thanks to his consistency, originality, and massive impact in promoting the Pidgin language through news broadcasting.

Respected legal luminary and peace crusader, Sir Dr Barrister Ntumfor Nico Halle, handed the award to Smart Njikang. Prior to winning the Best Pidgin Newscaster award this year, Njikang first won the award in 2020 and repeated the feat in 2023.

He thus becomes the first and only Pidgin newscaster to have won the Golden Awards three times. Observers say the rare wins cement his status as the undisputed king of Pidgin news in Cameroon.

Dedicates award to audience

After receiving the award, Njikang expressed delight to have been decorated before dedicating the distinction to the audience.

The broadcaster with over a decade of experience said the award goes to loyal listeners of Equinox Radio and viewers of Equinox TV. He also said the award is in honour of lovers of Pidgin English who have kept faith with his brand of news presentation.

“This award is not just for me. It is for every person who believes that Pidgin is a language and that information can be delivered in the language of the people and still remain professional and educative,” he said.

From Douala to Washington

The Golden Award came barely days after Ambassador received his first-ever international award. A fortnight ago, the Cameroon Diaspora Youths Network based in Washington DC, United States of America, recognized Smart Njikang Gabriel.

The Network said it was for his immense contributions to youth mentorship, media development, and the promotion of Cameroonian culture through Pidgin broadcasting.

The international recognition, coupled with the Golden Award, adds to the long list of trophies and certificates he has won over the years. He is one of the most decorated broadcasters of his generation.
