UN reveals 2.9 million Cameroonians in need of humanitarian aid.

The global body made the disclosure Saturday, August 15.

This was during a sports walk organised by Plan International as part of activities marking World Humanitarian Day. The day commemorated on August 19, will be observed under the theme: “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities”. 

The UN in the message said the celebration aims to remind the population that behind every humanitarian figure is a person, a family and a story.

It should be noted that the sports walk brought together humanitarian partners, civil society organizations, government representatives, World Health Organization, WHO, World Food Programme, WFP, the Cameroon Red Cross and national civil society associations.

Speaking during activities marking the day, the UN system Coordinator, Dr Issa Sanogo, thanked government and partners for their strong participation in the campaign.

The UN official has called on all stakeholders to sustain their support and keep standing. 

The UN Coordinator further disclosed that the event was a reminder of the urgent need to protect civilians and humanitarian workers, uphold International Humanitarian Law and strengthen collective action for people affected by crises. 

The activity, officials said, was aimed at promoting physical well-being among frontline workers while building strong comrades across the humanitarian network. 

The World Humanitarian Day observed annually on August 19 marks the anniversary of the 2003 Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad, Iraq, which claimed the lives of 22 aid workers. 

The 2026 edition marks the 23rd anniversary of the event, and serves as a global reminder of the imperative to uphold International Humanitarian Law and protect civilians and medical facilities. 

For crisis-affected populations worldwide, World Humanitarian Day, is a vital platform to advocate for their survival, dignity, and fundamental human rights. 

According to the WHO, the day pays tribute to humanitarian and health workers who put their duty of care above their own safety and lives, as they serve communities affected by conflict and crises. 

WHO said this year's global campaign, led by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA, focuses on Families of Fallen Humanitarians, highlighting the personal stories of aid workers through the voices of families, loved ones, and the communities they left behind. 

For WHO, World Humanitarian Day is an opportunity to honour the memory of colleagues and health workers who lost their lives in the line of duty, while recognizing the dedication of health workers who continue to provide care in some of the world's most challenging and dangerous environments.
