The Commissioner in charge of the Department for the Common Market, Economic, Monetary and Financial Affairs of the Economic Community of Central African States, ECCAS, H.E. Oluimo Da Silva, has praised the country's sustained commitment to advancing regional integration.

The ECCAS Commissioner made the remarks on July 28, during a courtesy visit he paid to the Directorate General of Customs, DGC, in Yaounde.

During the visit, Oluimo Da Silva held a meeting with some Customs officials at the conference room of the DGC. The ECCAS Commissioner also used the occasion to commend Cameroon for its regional and international leadership in customs modernization.

According to information made public by the Customs Department, the visit, which took place on the sidelines of the 17th Central Africa Annual Transborder Trade Fair, FORTRAC, was a courtesy call following the Commissioner's recent appointment.

The Customs Department said the visit focused on Cameroon's preparedness for the effective implementation of the ECCAS integration agenda, particularly the Community Customs Code, the Common Customs Tariff and the Rules of Origin.

It added that the two parties exchanged views on the major challenges facing the Commission, including institutional financing, human resource capacity, the coexistence of ECCAS with other regional integration frameworks, and the effective implementation of Community instruments by Member States.

According to the DGC, the Commissioner maintained a close working relationship with Cameroon Customs while serving at the Secretariat of the World Customs Organization.

Customs said based on the experience, Oluimo Da Silva expressed confidence in the expertise of the Cameroon Customs Administration and his expectation that it would continue to support the successful implementation of his mandate.
