North West: Scout movement revived, members urged to be peace ambassadors.

The event took place at the Divisional Officer's office of Tubah Subdivision in Mezam Division.

Present during the ceremony was the Divisional Officer of Tubah Subdivision, Massango Metouge Narcisse; the President of the National Scout Council, HRM Prof Mbacham Wilfred Fon; 3rd National Commissioner, Scouts of Cameroon, Chief Sylvie Mada Djouomouo; National Adviser number 1, Epo Mary; administrative and traditional authorities.

In his speech during the event, the President of the National Scout Council, HRM Prof Mbacham Wilfred Fon, said the scout movement started in 1907 and helps to build youths and develop them to become responsible citizens, principled leaders and committed servants of the community and nation as a whole. He added that the movement has a mantra which is service to God first, to humanity and then to self.

"When people talk about servant leadership, it is exactly what we teach the scouts about. We teach them also on how to survive in very harsh environments and to overcome challenges,” Prof Mbacham said. 

He added that the scout movement is a worldwide and it is also a network of people who can give helping hands when need arises. He also noted that in the movement, they try to teach the people about entrepreneurship, innovation, peace and unity, humility and respect. 

"It is a movement where youths can identify with easily, which will help them grow both professionally and socially," said.

Exemplifying servant leadership

Speaking further, the president called on the newly installed executive to exemplify servant leadership, which is the service first to God, to humanity and to self, and to lead by being trustworthy, being disciplined and also being compassionate. 

"...our young people must see in you the same values that we seek to instill in them,” he said. 

Prof Mbacham called on scouts to be ambassadors of peace, especially the defenders of truth, and should also bring in others into the movement so that it can grow. 

"I particularly enjoin each and every one of you to ensure that by this time next year each and every one should be able to show that you have brought in 10 other scouts. My hope and vision are for a vibrant and united scouting movement throughout the North West Region, one that reaches towns and villages, that strengthens communities and promotes environmental stewardship," the president highlighted.

On his part, the newly installed regional bureau president, Akuo William, in an interview with The Guardian Post mentioned that he is extremely happy for the position that has been bestowed on him, and that he is going to do his best to improve the rate of recruitment of scouts. 

This, he said, is to ensure that the youths can continuously grow morally upright, and their characters strengthened. He further pleaded on authorities to partner with them in fostering the development of youths through all vital programmes. 

"Scouting has been a cornerstone of youth development, instilling character, leadership skills and a commitment to service among young people. Since scouts develop empathy, build character and become active contributors to society, we believe that continuous investment and support for scouting will yield substantial benefits for the wellbeing and prosperity of the Region," he said.
