Tiko crowned SW’s cleanest municipality, set for national contest.

It secured the regional title after outperforming Buea and Limbe councils in the Fako Divisional Clean City Contest. Tiko will compete against municipalities across the country in the national competition. 

The results, which are traditionally announced on World Habitat Day, will be done by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Tiko joins Nkambe Council, winner of the North West Regional contest, and other qualifying municipalities nationwide in the race for the top prize of 100 million FCFA. The second and third placed councils will receive 70 million FCFA and 60 million FCFA respectively.

Following the announcement of the results on July 20, Tiko Mayor, HRM Peter Ikome Mesoso III, summoned a meeting aimed at preparing the municipality for the national contest.

The meeting brought together heads of the municipal hygiene and sanitation units as well as officials from the town planning department, who presented proposals on measures to further improve the municipality's cleanliness and enhance its chances of winning the national title.

Addressing participants, Mayor Mesoso urged council staff to remain committed to the task ahead, stressing the importance of teamwork, discipline and active community participation in maintaining a clean environment.

Tiko's strongest performance in the national clean city competition came in 2023, when it finished fourth nationwide. The council will now be seeking to improve on that achievement and secure a place among the country's top three cleanest municipalities.

During last year's national contest, no council from the North West or South West regions featured among the top three winners. Nkongsamba Council emerged national champion, while Bafoussam II and Garoua II councils finished second and third respectively.
