MTN Cameroon to build digital biomedical laboratory at Japoma District Hospital.

Implemented between June 1 and June 21, "21 Days of Y'ello Care" forms part of the telecommunications company's commitment to improving quality healthcare access in Cameroon.

This year’s edition is under the theme: "Expanding Equitable Health for Every Community". The initiative was presented to the press in Douala on May 29, alongside a visit to the hospital site where the laboratory will be constructed and made fully operational within the 21-day campaign period.

According to officials of the health facility, the new laboratory is expected to significantly improve diagnostic services and enhance the quality of healthcare delivery in the rapidly growing Japoma area.

Representing the Director of the Japoma District Hospital, Dr Diffo Collens, explained that the hospital had requested support for a modern laboratory capable of providing reliable and timely medical test results.

"We expressed our desire for a state-of-the-art laboratory that will enable us obtain immediate, quality test results at affordable costs and provide efficient care to our patients," he stated.

Hospital authorities noted that the facility's existing laboratory equipment have become outdated, particularly following the institution's recent transition from a Community Medical Centre, CMA, to a District Hospital. The new laboratory is therefore expected to bridge a critical gap in diagnostic services.

Community welcomes initiative

The project has also received strong backing from local traditional and administrative authorities.

Representing the Paramount Chief of the Bakoko Canton of Wouri Division, His Majesty Mbog Eboutibé, Deputy Secretary General of the Royal Palace, said the initiative stemmed from an appeal made by the traditional ruler HRM Jamil Songwe Madiba to MTN Cameroon.

He expressed gratitude to the telecommunications company for responding positively, noting that the laboratory would serve not only residents of Japoma but the wider Bakoko community.

"This project will benefit all communities living within the Bakoko Canton of Wouri. We are grateful to MTN Cameroon for answering our call and helping to improve healthcare services in our locality," he said.

For her part, Nathalie Epoune née Nguinya, representative of the Japoma Health District Chief, said the laboratory would strengthen healthcare delivery in the area and foster collaboration with other health facilities that may require specialised laboratory services.

Additional healthcare projects

Besides the Japoma laboratory project, MTN Cameroon officials have revealed that, together with its partners, they will also undertake two other major health interventions during the 2026 Y'ello Care campaign.

These include the deployment of a telemedicine system aimed at facilitating remote medical consultations and specialist support, as well as the renovation of the maternity ward at Djoungolo District Hospital in Yaounde, to improve maternal and neonatal healthcare services. However, the company has not disclosed the budgets allocated to the various projects.

Although absent during the site visit for academic reasons, the Director of Japoma District Hospital, Dr Obam Assam Charles Armel, conveyed appreciation to MTN Cameroon and stakeholders involved in the initiative. He also shared his vision for the continued development of the health facility.

Responding to healthcare challenges

The projects, officials said, are being implemented against the backdrop of persistent healthcare challenges in several parts of Cameroon, including limited access to specialised services, long distances between communities and health facilities, and lengthy waiting times for patients.

Through the Y'ello Care initiative, MTN Cameroon employees will work alongside healthcare professionals, local authorities, community leaders and non-governmental organisations, various partners, to execute the projects within the stipulated period.

Launched some 19 years ago across MTN Group's operations in 22 African countries, the Y'ello Care programme was designed to promote employee volunteerism through community-driven social interventions. 

Over the years, it has become one of the group's flagship corporate social responsibility platforms, mobilising staff and partners around impactful development projects.

The 2026 edition further reinforces MTN Cameroon's commitment to leveraging technology and innovation to strengthen healthcare systems, improve the well-being of communities across the country.
