At Labour Day feast: Bilingualism commission SG commends staff, announces special awards.

The Secretary General of the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism, NCPBM, Dr Chi Asafor Cornelius, has commended staff of the institution and announced awards to honour outstanding workers.

Dr Chi Asafor gave the commendation and announced the upcoming awards on Friday, May 1, in Yaounde.



This was during a ceremony at the NCPBM headquarters to celebrate the 140th Labour Day. 

The Day this year was celebrated under the theme: “Social dialogue and decent work: Factors of peace, national cohesion and economic development of the country”.

The Secretary General on behalf of the President of the NCPBM, Peter Mafany Musonge, praised workers for their exploits. 

He challenged them to remain committed and resilient in service, insisting that the hierarchy of the institution will continue to work to improve their plight.

Dr Chi Asafor noted that amid the uncertain global atmosphere mostly provoked by the war in the Middle East, the State and authorities at NCPBM continue to ensure workers get every due. He said the Labour Day was also a day for hierarchy to speak truth to workers.

He being employed at NCPBM, the SG said, is not just about getting paid but making a career and serving the Cameroonian people. 

Dr Chi Asafor reiterated that, the Commission will continue to promote social dialogue and decent work.

At the NCPBM, Dr Chi Asafor noted that workers’ rights are respect in line with the laws in force. Staff, he detailed enjoy health insurance, get promoted when deserved, get advancement that matches their career profiles when its time among other benefits.

Issues around social dialogue and decent work, Dr Chi Asafor noted, was extensively discussed “as part of scientific aspects” of the Day. At the Commission, he stated that social dialogue is promoted, lived and implemented. 

Actions, he stated, will continue along same lines to “promote social dialogue and decent work for greater performance”.

The Secretary General disclosed that, actions are already being finalized for the special awards ceremony to honour outstanding staff of the NCPBM. The awards, he said, will be accompanied by cash and other decorations to promote excellence and hard work.

Going forward, the SG said there will be zero tolerance for those who come late to work or fail to treat files speedily. 

He termed the shortcomings misconduct, insisting that, such “must cease, failing which sanctions provided for in the regulations governing our institution will be meted out”.

Dr Chi Asafor also said no file forwarded to hierarchy will receive appropriate attention if it is not in French and English languages. On this score, he reminded the staff of the Commission’s place in promoting bilingualism and living together.

The SG also promised to convey the message of appreciation and concerns of staff to the President of the Commission. Before the celebrations on Friday, the NCPDM had organised several activities among them; a fitness walk, conference on the theme of the Day, cultural activities among others.
