FEICOM training council staff on climate window implementation.

Participants and officials after start of training

The Special Council Support Fund for Mutual Assistance, FEICOM, has begun a two-day training for staff of councils on how to implement its climate window initiative

The training went underway at the institution’s head office in Yaounde, Monday.

Speaking at the start of the training, the Director General of FEICOM, Philippe Camille Akoa, reminded participants about the reality of climate change and its effects on humanity.

Akoa said climate change is noticeable in rising temperatures, declining rains and extreme weather conditions disrupting activities. The changes, he said, are contributing to make life more difficult for humans.

More persons, he said, are increasingly becoming vulnerable with orders seeing their conditions getting worst.

He explained that government took the challenges into consideration before elaborating the National Development Strategy 2020-2030, SND 30.

Camille Akoa said the SND30 strategy contains an elaborated environmental and nature protection policy that focuses on: increasing integration of climate change issues in the political and social sectors of national life.

He added that it also has details on reinforcing the capacities of institutions charged with monitoring climate change activities and putting in place measures to address its effects.

The FEICOM DG noted that the moves taken by government said are in line with international agreements like the Paris accord on climate change which Cameroon had already ratified.

The accord, he said, requires nations to work towards reducing green gas emissions that pollute the atmosphere and reduce the ozone layer.

Specific themes

Aspects of the training Monday focused on equipping council staff to conceive and implement projects that make communities resilient to disasters like floods.

Resource persons said the capacity building is important especially where council officials master the factors that provoke climate change in the short, medium and long term.

Experts explained that, such disruptions are related to human activities like farming and population growth leading to unchecked urbanization, construction of roads, bridges, among others

Some participants appealed to FEICOM to come up with a document on climate change challenges in communities given that several council areas have different challenges related to climate change.

Other participants also called on the government and FEICOM to include insecurity and famer-grazier conflicts among the list of challenges.

Participants blamed such conflicts on the fast decrease in arable land, to satisfy the needs of both animal breeders and farmers.

Participants were reminded on the need to improve on water management practices to avoid extreme dryness, where there is no water available to serve agricultural purposes and areas where abundance of the resource rather results in floods.

The second part of the training today, officials stated, will focus on how councils could speed up the implementation of the roadmap for accelerated reforestation and recovery of degraded lands.
