Yufola Gilbert: Jakiri ELECAM delegate

There is growing fear of uncertainty in North West regional capital, Bamenda, after at least four persons were reportedly killed within 72 hours in Nkwen, Bamenda III subdivision.

Amongst the four persons are two workers of elections management body, Elections Cameroon, ELECAM. The others include a popular businessman and a boy identified as a Nigerian.

In the morning of Thursday, January 19, a mob stormed the residence of ELECAM Divisional Branch Delegate for Momo division, Kahyi John Fai and beat him to death.

According to information gathered from eyewitnesses, a boy was caught in the early hours of Thursday trying to steal around the New Road neighborhood in Bamenda.

When caught, the boy is said to have told the irate population that Kahyi John is his boss.

Following what was believed to be a confession, the suspected thief is said to have directed the crowd to the residence of the ELECAM staff.

The mob, according to our source, removed Kahyi John from his house, got him well beaten.

The ELECAM delegate was later rushed to PMI Nkwen District Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

His remains were later on deposited at the mortuary by family members and his close friends.

Our source who opted for anonymity for security reasons also revealed that Kahyi John is noted for dealing in 'underground' businesses with some boys in the New Road neighborhood.

Before the death of Kahyi John on Thursday, another ELECAM staff, the Delegate of Jakiri in Bui division, Yufola Gilbert, was shot beside his gate at Foncha Street neighbourhood in Bamenda.

The unfortunate incident occurred at about 8pm on Wednesday night in Nkwen, Bamenda III subdivision.

According to reports, Yufola Gilbert was monitored and shot by alleged separatist fighters as he was driving home.

The reason for his assassination remains sketchy, but his death and that of his colleague comes few days after President Paul Biya convened the senatorial elections for March 12.

Separatists have since vowed to disrupt the polls insisting the election would not hold in the restive Anglophone regions.

On Tuesday, January 17, a popular businessman at Mobile Nkwen, whose only name we got as Michael was kidnapped by alleged separatist fighters and on their way, he tried escaping from the motorbike and was shot dead on the spot, The Guardian Post learnt.

Michael, who hails from Mbouda in the West region was a popular trader. He was owner of a shop at Mobile Nkwen, near Ghana Street. Same Tuesday night, another boy, whose name we could not get was killed by gunmen.

The corpse of the boy who was later on identified as a Nigerian was discovered at the Behind Che neighborhood in Bamenda. No separatist group claimed responsibility for the killings.
