AFCON winner, Georges Mandjeck, retires from football.

Cameroon international midfielder, George Constant Mandjeck, has retired from professional football at the age of 37.

The product of Kadji Sport Academy in Cameroon made the announcement Monday March 30.

The decision ends Mandjeck’s close to 20 years career.

He has made over 376 appearances with at least 12 goals scored.

The midfielder made his professional debut in July 2007 with VfB Stuttgart in Germany.

In his post on social media, Mandjeck explained that he resolved to take the decision two years after his last game.

Due to injury suffered in his last game, Mandjeck has been out of action.

He retraced his early steps in the industry and said football has been key in shaping him and also thanked fans for the support over the years.

“A career doesn’t last a lifetime. A vision, however, can last forever. Today, I’m making an important decision. I’m turning the page. Without regret, with pride. Thank you to everyone who supported me, stood by me, and pushed me to become better,” Mandjeck wrote.

Manjeck mentioned that although he has called time on his career, it however marks the start of a “new beginning” stating that he has been “working on a project”. He said the said project “reflects who I am”.

“(…) A project born from a simple moment but one that can change everything. It’s not just a brand. It’s a new way of thinking about movement. NAYUMA. The beginning of a new chapter,” Mandjeck said.

In his close to two decades professional career, Mandjeck has played for about 12 clubs in Germany, Czech Republic, Turkey, Israel, Belgium, Cyprus, before ending his career in Israel with Ironi Kiryat Shmona.

Mandjeck however spent a greater part of his career in France following spells at Rennes, Auxerre, and Metz where he played for close to 10 years.

Mandjeck has also made half a century of appearances with the Cameroon national team.

He made his debut in 2009 but became a key member of the team between 2014-2019.

The major highlight of his time with the national team was in 2017 when he won the African Cup of Nations, AFCON. He played in all the team’s matches as the Indomitable Lions won their fifth AFCON trophy.

He was also part of the 2015 and 2019 AFCON where Cameroon was knocked out in the group stages and round of 16 respectively.
