Teaching, management and support staff of the University of Buea have been hailed for their positive contributions towards achieving the vision and mission of the institution in 2025.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Ngomo Horace Manga, delivered the congratulatory message during a solemn New Year wishes ceremony at the institution on Thursday February 19, 2026.

The year 2025 was a great and fruitful year for the institution with some 116 lecturers promoted to different academic ranks in the institution and over 12,000 students admitted in 2025/2026 academic year. This growth, according to the Vice Chancellor, highlighted the University of Buea’s appeal to young Cameroonians from across the country.

The performance of the lecturers, he added, was a sign of the values of hard work, discipline and commitment displayed by the university and visible amongst its staff. Such growth confirms, he said, the institution’s place as the best higher education institution for young people.

In this light, he enjoined staff and collaborators to ensure they maintain the course of academic excellence by emphasising discipline, professionalism, and teamwork. He said the institution has focused on the essentials, which are to teach, research, and bringing value through these research results to improve teaching.

The Vice Chancellor said the university has a well-known mission, which does not change with the years.

“We only amplify it, and we improve it through technology, so the university will keep improving on its mission of teaching, training, research, and outreach activities,” Prof Ngomo said.

The success and emergence as the best university in the country by the institution, he noted, was a demonstration that the staff, teachers and those in the classrooms, who give assignments, correct them, those in the workshops, support staff, cleaners and everybody within the university has been able to embrace the vision.

In this light, he said both administrative, management, lecturers and support staff must maintain discipline, professionalism, stay proactive, develop new programmes, do research to update and improve their ability to build capacity at the University and by way of outreach activities.

Registrar pleads for more support

Addressing the VC and all staff at the Dorothy Limunga Njeuma Amphitheatre, Prof Eneke Bechem, the Registrar of the University of Buea, thanked the government of their continuous financial support and the VC for his hands-on leadership.

She, however, noted that some challenges such as deficits in infrastructure and space, insufficient classrooms, laboratories, workshops, office spaces, limited student accommodation on campus and continuing insecurity are limiting the institution from reaching its full potential.

She noted that the financial situation of the institution has improved, but more financial resources will empower it to do better to improve the teaching and learning experience.

“These challenges are not insurmountable, especially with your proficient guidance of the Vice Chancellor,” she said.

In spite of the challenges, she encouraged staff to continue working hard to position the University of Buea as a beacon of intellectual leadership, an institution that not only impacts knowledge, but shapes character, advances innovation and contributes meaningfully to national and global developments.
