The youth-led not-for-profit civil society organisation, Build Ensemble, has carried out an environmental and human investment initiative in Bamusso Subdivision, Ndian Division of the South West Region.

The activity, led by the organisation’s Director and political figure, Kohtem Sambit, took place on Friday, February 6, 2026.

Officials said the exercise formed part of activities to mark the 60th edition of the Youth Day on February 11.

The organisation’s officials planted 60 trees and empowered the local population with knowledge on climate change and marine biodiversity conservation.

It brought together community members for a symbolic and practical exercise aimed at promoting environmental sustainability in the coastal locality.

A few days ago, the organisation offered 60 trees through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education to D’Afanloum community in the Mefou Afamba Division of the Center Region

According to Sambit, the initiative aligns with the 2026 Youth Day policy of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education.

He said the policy encourages the planting of trees nationwide to mark the diamond jubilee of the celebration.

“…beyond the symbolism, the exercise is part of our commitment to human investment and environmental protection,” Sambit said.

He explained that the choice of Bamusso was deliberate, noting that the area, like many coastal communities in Cameroon, is often hard to access and underserved by development organisations despite its strategic importance.

Bamusso also shares socio-economic and environmental links with neighbouring Nigerian communities. As a coastal community, Bamusso, he stated, faces growing threats from climate change and plastic waste pollution.

The challenges, he stated, directly endanger its marine ecosystem and the livelihoods of its inhabitants.

To address the challenges, Sambit stated that Build Ensemble organised a capacity-building workshop on climate change adaptation, marine biodiversity conservation, and plastic waste management.

Participants, he added, were educated on the harmful effects of plastic waste on marine life and trained on how to collect plastics from the marine environment for recycling.

Sambit told The Guardian Post that the organisation further recommended the future installation of a plastic waste collector in the community to strengthen local waste management efforts.

Sambit noted that the planted trees will serve as carbon sinks, sources of nutrition, natural shelter, and protective barriers against coastal degradation, similar to the role played by mangroves.

He added that the trees will also foster social cohesion, as community members can use the shaded areas for meetings and social interactions.

The initiative was warmly welcomed by the local population, who praised the organisation for combining environmental action with community empowerment.

Build Ensemble, its officials said, has through the activities reaffirmed its commitment to supporting vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities, particularly in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation.
