ELECAM launches 2026 voter registration, revision.

Staff enrolling potential voter

The Director General of Elections at Elections Cameroon, ELECAM, Dr Erik Essousse, has officially launched the 2026 revision of the national electoral register.

The launching was the focus of ceremony Monday at the Omnisport and Nkolmessing neighbourhoods in Yaounde V, Mfoundi Division of the Centre Region.

It was under the theme: “Large-scale registration of women and youth on the electoral register to increase participation in the electoral process”.

Dr Essousse said the exercise is also part of preparations for the upcoming twin elections, with the Head of State, Paul Biya expected to convene the electorate.

He said in line with the Electoral Code, voter registration officially opened nationwide on January 2 across all ELECAM branches, allowing eligible citizens to register, update their information or correct discrepancies in the voters’ roll.

After touring the seven enrolment stands that make up the seven Subdivisions of the Mfoundi Division all stationed at the Omnisport neighbourhood, Dr Essousse said the event marked more than a routine administrative exercise.

According to him, the annual revision of the electoral register is a cornerstone in maintaining a healthy and credible voters’ list, acceptable to all stakeholders. He praised ELECAM staff for their sustained commitment under sometimes challenging conditions.

“Our staff work tirelessly every year to ensure that we can organise credible, peaceful and objective elections whose results can be accepted by all,” the Elections DG said.

He acknowledged the role of the media and civil society organisations in disseminating information and encouraging public participation. The DG stressed that collaboration with actors remains essential to strengthening democratic practices.

Dr Essousse did not shy away from acknowledging criticisms directed at ELECAM. While noting that some opposition parties have raised concerns in the past, he equally pointed out that others have publicly congratulated the institution’s strides made in recent electoral cycles.

“The work can be improved, and we will always continue to work,” he stated. He described ELECAM as a credible institution recognised by many Cameroonians as a source of hope, while insisting that identified shortcomings would continue to be addressed.

According to the Elections DG, the replacement of ageing equipment has enhanced the management of voter registration data, reduced errors and improve the overall efficiency of the enrolment process.

The new kits, already deployed in several centres, he said, are designed to speed up registration while ensuring better data security.

Citizens salute ELECAM

A supporter from the Patriotic Movement for the Prosperity of the People, MP3 party, Emric Hamako, who visited the registration point at the Yaounde V ELECAM branch, expressed satisfaction with what he observed.

He noted that the enrolment process appeared more organised and responsive compared to previous years.

“I am happy to notice that enrolment has effectively started and that those in charge are doing a good job,” Hamako said.

He expressed delight that ELECAM officials were providing clear explanations to prospective voters.

Hamako urged Cameroonians who have not yet registered to do so and to collect their voters’ cards in preparation for upcoming twin elections.

Hamata Doubla, a resident of Yaounde V, who registered for the first time, it is personal achievement.

“It is my first time to get registered, and this is the best decision for me. I now feel like a full citizen, ready to vote whenever elections are convened,” he said.
