As new gov’t awaited: Biya says goodbye to some ministers at New Year wishes today.

The President of the Republic, Paul Biya, will today receive best wishes for the year 2026, from members of the diplomatic corps and national dignitaries.

Though an annual tradition, this year’s New Year wishes ceremony will be taking place within the context of expectations and apprehensions among members of government.

This follows the announcement by President Biya, last December 31, 2025, of the imminent formation of a new government “in the coming days”, to kickstart his roadmap for the current mandate.

The announcement, coupled with several leaked governments making rounds on social media platforms, is giving many, if not all members of government sleepless nights.

The fate of many ministers, especially considered to be deadwoods and unproductive as well as those accused of having pilfered scarce State resources is now said to be hanging in the balance.

Political watchers are forecasting that President Biya, being the most unpredictable human in his 43 years of leadership and counting, might use today’s New Year wishes ceremony as an opportunity to bid goodbye to some ministers and his close collaborators.

The announced cabinet shake-up, commentators say, is more or less making some ministers nervous.

This, they argue, is because it is coming barely months after the hotly contested October 12, 2025 presidential election in which Biya recorded his worst results since the 1992 presidential election.

The nonagenarian leader was declared winner, by the Constitutional Council, with a 53.66% score.

Political bookmakers are unanimous that the catastrophic results recorded by the ruling CPDM party in some parts of the country, where regime barons reign supreme, is a clear message that most Cameroonians are increasingly disconnected with Biya’s government.

Unpopular party songbirds and lackeys in government who failed to execute life-changing projects which contributed to many voting against the CPDM candidate at the October 12 poll, are also said to be suffering from sleepless nights since Biya announced an imminent shake-up.

Theirs, keen political analysts have argued, is so because the Head of State will undoubtedly want to compensate those who fought hard to secure his victory at their backyards.

Fears are also said to be rife within the government, as names of some ministers are repeatedly left out even in the social media governments that have been making rounds.

Such names, some of whom have been removed from lucrative positions and sent to the garage, we also gathered, are among those the Head of State might sacrifice to revive the ailing, bloated and unproductive government that has been in place since January 4, 2019.

Rumours that those who might be dropped from the government, immediately arrested and thrown into jail is also sending shockwaves down the spine of many regime strongmen.

This is especially for those suspected to have been involved in corrupt practices or embezzlement of State resources as the Head of State might revisit files of some corruption-related scandals the country has witnessed in the past years.

Such a move, other sources within the corridors of power are unanimous, could be a strategy by Biya to further dispel claims by his critics that he has been governing the country by proxy and “High Instructions”.

Also, in the category of those not sure of their space in the Biya government in the days ahead are those perceived to be bitterly hated by Cameroonians for their highhandedness, clearly posing as untouchables and their arrogant treatment of compatriots as lesser beings.

About today’s New Year wishes ceremony

As per a release from the Minister, Director of the Civil Cabinet at the Presidency, Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, read on State media, CRTV, yesterday, and per the official programme from the protocol service of the Unity Palace, which The Guardian Post has seen, the exercise will be in two segments.

The first to begin at 1:35p.m. and end at 3p.m. is reserved for heads of diplomatic services and representatives of other international organisations accredited to Cameroon.

It will feature a speech from the Dean of the diplomatic corps and a response from the Head of State.

President Biya is expected to thank the diplomats whose countries stood by Cameroon in diverse ways in 2025 in achieving several development projects.

The second part of the programme later in the evening from 3:15p.m. is reserved for national dignitaries. After the traditional handshakes, Biya might later commune briefly with his guests before retiring for the day at about 4:45pm per the programme.
