The National President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, MRC party, Prof Maurice Kamto, has said the appointment of Monique Ouli Ndongo, a member of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM party, into the Constitutional Council is a “further act of defiance against the democracy of the outgoing President of the Republic”.

His outing comes hours after President Paul Biya in a presidential decree on Tuesday, April 8, appointed the CPDM Central Committee official as a member of the Constitutional Council.

In a statement published on his Facebook page, the MRC leader said the appointment bodes ill for the forthcoming presidential election as it comes at a time when the Constitutional Council displayed incompetence by not applying Article 80 of the Electoral Code on the publication of the national electoral list.

He added that the President of the Constitutional Council himself is being reproached for having taken part in a partisan meeting during which the participants called on President Biya to stand as candidate at the forthcoming election.

“This appointment reinforces the one-party nature of the Constitutional Council and suggests that the groundwork is being laid for another electoral hold-up. Such manifestly illegal maneuvers are clear signs of a lack of serenity…,” part of Kamto’s message read.

He also raised concerns about the president’s dual role as both Head of State and leader of the CPDM party, which violates of Article 7(4) of the Constitution.

According to him, President Paul Biya, who is his party's candidate in the forthcoming presidential election, seems to be sending a clear message to Cameroonians that they will have to rely only on themselves, their vigilance, and their determination if they hope that the outcome of the ballot will actually reflect their choice and therefore their will.

“I want to repeat this: the presidential election of 2025 will not be a repeat of that of 7 October 2018, which was declared to have been ‘won’ by the CPDM candidate, at the end of a ballot in which the official rate of validly cast votes made public by the Constitutional Council was 100.48%,” the message added.

Prof Maurice Kamto further urged the people of Cameroon to prepare an appropriate response, and redouble their vigilance.
