2025 presidentials: Biya bounces back with daily social media outings.

The complex analysis as to whether President Paul Biya would seek re-election or “go back to the village,” is gradually giving way to a general view that the man of November 6, 1982, could be on course to fight for another mandate that will give him a historic 50-year rule by 2032.

Biya, whose popularity, going by the deafening calls from his supporters of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM, remains unrivalled, is on the verge of publicly joining the 2025 presidential election dance.

Having avoided stating in clear terms whether or not he is interested in another mandate, Biya has resorted to a communication posture that is akin to what the nation witnessed, months to the 2018 presidential poll.

The Head of State has rebooted his handle on the social media platform, X formerly known as Tweeter, delivering rallying messages that have triggered diverse reactions.

Covertly, many say the consistency in tweets from the Head of State shows he is going to be on the starting block to succeed himself.

Many are those who are already speculating that the series of tweets in the last one week would culminate in an affirmative declaration of his readiness to seek votes to stay on as Head of State.

The content of the tweets, style and consistency, are out of touch with the formal appointments, telegrams and sometimes messages of commiseration, which Biya usually sends to different stakeholders.

What has been transpiring in the last couple of days, pundits are noting, is some sort of political re-engineering to stay relevant.

The tweets released this far have been centered on the totality of Cameroon, need for resilience, unity, peace and other vital details needed to keep the country strong.

Biya, by every political reading, observers are saying, is, going by the latest tweets, rather indicating that he is still far from bidding goodbye to the Presidential seat.

He is analysed as rather using the tweets to reenergise himself and subtly campaigning in the process, to retain power when Cameroonians go to the polls on October 11, 2025.

Enter pregnant messages

Shortly after tweeting to wish Muslim faithful, across the country, a happy Ramadan Feast, on March 31, 2025, Biya opened what has now become a series of tweets, with the need to overcome “artificial divisions,” to keep Cameroon intact.

He had tweeted that “our constant action has been and is to overcome the artificial divisions created by colonization, to decolonize mentalities, transcend the colonial past…to build and consolidate with Cameroonians and for Cameroonians, a Cameroon that stands tall and jealous of its freedom”.

Biya’s next tweet after this, extoled citizens about unity and the country’s international credibility.

“We are united, and we will be even more so. United, we are respected and credible on the international stage. United we stand, divided we fall,” he tweeted.

Kicks against secession

In his third tweet, Biya noted that secession is not a project before insisting that, “our past, present and future sing the chorus of unity and call on us to permanently strengthen our national community”.

My ideology

At 92 and currently in his 43rd year as Head of State, Biya, through his fresh tweeting glee, reminded the citizenry of his ideology about Cameroon.

“My ideology is Cameroon, always Cameroon, in a prosperous Africa and a world of solidarity,” he stated.

Rejects chaos, crusades peace

Biya, who has already been endorsed by different social groupings nationwide, has also tweeted rejecting chaos and crusading peace as the best environment through which Cameroon can thrive.

“My fundamental wager remains the rejection of chaos; indeed, like an individual, Cameroon can only assert itself and flourish in a balanced international environment, profoundly marked by peace,” the President shared via X.

Addressing global tension

On Sunday April 6, 2025, the Head of State shared the view that: “I believe that peace and security, on any scale, are global public goods, the protection and promotion of which are the responsibility of all States enjoy, and the indivisibility of which requires equal attention to be paid to all areas of tension, regardless of location”.

State interdependence as opportunity for humanity

Yesterday, the Head of State opened the week, underscoring the advantage for humanity if interdependence of States is strengthened.

To Biya, he is “convinced that the strengthening of interdependence between States can only become an opportunity for humanity if it is underpinned by an ethic of peace, equality, justice and collective progress”.

Subtly reply to Catholic Bishops?

Outside the interpretation that Biya is by the consistent tweets already on the campaign trail, others are reading his recent deportment inversely.

The mien of Biya, some are insisting, is a smart reply to the March 28, 2025, Pastoral Letter of Catholic Bishops. Recall that in the letter, they outlined a 10-point criteria which they urged Cameroonians to watch out for in every presidential aspirant.

It is being contextualised that while the letter was released March 28, Biya started tweeting consistently on March 31. Pundits add to the mix media analysis and buzz that Biya is not at par with the qualities the Bishops outlined.

Analysts say the content of the Head of State’s in the last one week and still counting, rather positions him as a man who carries much of what the Bishops outlined as being needed in anyone who desires to lead the country.
