President Paul Biya and his Nigerian counterpart, Muhammadu Buhari, have officially commissioned the Cross River Bridge linking the two friendly countries.

This was the focus of a ceremony at the border between the two countries, chaired by Ministers Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi of Cameroon and Zubairu Dada of Nigeria, representing their Heads of State respectively.

The bridge, according to Cameroon’s Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, is a continuation of the President’s commitment to implement the Greentree Agreement, governing the transfer of Nigeria’s authority over the Bakassi peninsula to Cameroon.

He said it also aims at speeding up the development of cross-border roads and development between the two countries.

The Ekok-Mfum Bridge recently launched is part of the wider project dubbed the Transport Facilitation on the Bamenda-Enugu Corridor which involved three major components sponsored by the Cameroon and Nigerian governments, African Development Bank, ECOWAS and other development partners.

According to Minister Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, the bridge and the Joint Border Point was a sign of the growing relationship and confidence between the two countries.

“The bridge and the Joint Border Post is a milestone in the relationship between Cameroon and Nigeria. The 403-metre bridge is symbol of sincere friendship and brotherhood. It is a physical tool of bringing people together and promoting economic activities. The bridge is a sign of the commitment of our two heads of states to promote social cohesion,” he said.
