Cameroon Ballon d’Or Awards: Coton Sport grabs majority trophies.

FECAFOOT boss, Samuel Eto’o Fils, hands trophy of Best Player of the Year to Marou Souaibou

Current Elite One champions, Coton Sport of Garoua returned home with majority of the trophies handed out during the Cameroon Ballon d

The event was organised by the Cameroon Football Federation to rewards football actors in the country who excelled during the last football season.

The North region club which won the league one title and the Cup of Cameroon at the end of the 2021/2022 season saw its president, three of its players and the team’s head coach bagging awards during the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Forward and captain for the Garoua-based club, Marou Souaibou who was very instrumental in helping the team win their 17th league title and seventh Cup of Cameroon trophy at the end of last season won the Best Player of the Year Award.

Souaibou said his success is that of the entire team, adding that his coaches, teammates and club management all contributed to helping his bag the award.

He saluted especially the Eto’o Fils Samuel-led administration at FECAFOOT for bringing back the Ballon d’Or to reward merit in Cameroon football.

Mr. President, we were in the dark. Thanks to you today, we can dream and live from our art. Thank you for everything you do for us and thank you also to my teammates” Souaibou said after receiving his award.

He won the award ahead of Colombe of Dja and Lobo’s Betrand Mani and Ramses Donfack of Eding FC.

Apart from Souaibou, his teammate, Wassou Patient President Fernand Sadou and head coach Gabriel Haman also won respectively as Revelation of the Year, Club President of the Year and Best Coach of the Year.

South African-based Anye Derick who was goalkeeper for Coton Sport also won Best Goalkeeper of the Year award after helping the team to grab their 17th League One crown. He currently plays professional football with Maritzburg FC in the South African topflight championship.

 

Other outstanding players, officials rewarded

The awards night in Yaounde also saw players and officials from other clubs going home with trophies. Betrand Mani who emerged top scorer last season in the Elite One competition went on with the golden boot award while Enow Tambe of AS Fortuna got the trophy for the best goal scored during the 2021/2022 football season.

In the women’s topflight championship, dubbed  Guinness Super League, Monique Ngock of Éclair of  Sa’a won the Best Player of the Year Award, Lamine Mana who scored 19 goals for last season’s league winners, Awa FC bag the award of Revelation of the Year while Mike Ndoumou emerged as Best Coach of the Year.

Annete Ngo Ndom, goalkeeper of FAP of Yaounde won the Best Goalkeeper of the Year in the Guinness Super League competition.

The Cameroon Ballon d’Or event was attended by top ranking government officials, diplomats, football promoters and trainers among other dignitaries.
