Centre region: Four children in search of water fall into well, die.

Four children are reported to have fallen in an exposed well and died in Polifaland neighbourhood in Bafia, in the Mbam and Inoubou division of the Centre region. The unfortunate incident is said to have occurred last week while the deceased were in search of water.

According to one of the victims’ father, he did not imagine his child would go that far away from the house just to fetch water.

“We have a problem of water scarcity; we need water in Bafia. I was at home only to be called to be informed that my son had been discovered in a well,” the sad father said.

The people of Bafia have reportedly been facing a water scarcity. Inhabitants revealed that they had to switch to traditional wells and most of these wells are exposed and often unattended to.      

Most of the children have to go for long distances in order to get water and a times in the absence of their parents.        

With the recent death records, the inhabitants have pleaded with the authorities that be, to help them provide potable water, especially for the sake of their children who have to trek very long distances in order to get the precious liquid.                                                                                                                            

Sources have revealed that most of the wells in Bafia have gone dry.

Inhabitants have called on authorities to provide them with potable water; especially for the sake of their kids who have been falling into wells.

The Superintendent for Public Security, Ondoa Jean Leopold, is said to have acknowledged that there was water scarcity but urged inhabitants to take care of their wells and especially make sure they are always covered.

“It is caused by abandoned wells; this is the fourth case of a child drowning in a well. I am using this opportunity to tell the people to protect their wells. It can even happen to an adult. Children can’t play normally in the neighborhoods and ladders also should not be used to cover these wells,” Ondoa Jean Leopold is quoted as having said.

With the recent resurgence of cholera pandemic in the country, the population’s cry is for government to come to their aid by providing them portable water.
