Key stakeholders during the proclamation of results at the South West Court of Appeals

The ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement, CPDM, which ran unopposed during the November 30 Regional Elections has claimed all seats in the South West Regional Assembly.

The Chairperson of the Region’s Elections Supervisory Commission, Justice Beatrice Nambangi Ntuba, proclaimed the results during a solemn ceremony at the South West Court of Appeals.

The results were declared in Buea on Wednesday, December 3. Justice Nambangi described the elections process in the region as smooth without any hitches.

It involved over 1,500 electors made up of municipal councillors and traditional rulers. The CPDM grabbed all available seats.

The outcome reflects the party's complete control over the 31 municipal councils in the area, leaving no room for opposition participation.

The breakdown of the votes includes, Fako with 21 Divisional Delegates and three chiefs; Kupe Muanenguba with four chiefs and six Divisional Delegates; Lebialem with three chiefs and six Divisional Delegates; Manyu with nine Divisional Delegates and four chiefs; Meme with 15 Divisional Delegates and three chiefs and Ndian with 13 Divisional Delegates and three chiefs.

Thus, the CPDM controls all the 70 seats in the House of Divisional Delegates. The 20 chiefs in the House of Chiefs were voted by their peers and are not allied to any political party.

Justice Nambangi proclaiming the Regional Assembly election results

Speaking to the press after proclaiming the result, Justice Nambangi expressed satisfaction with the process.

“…It was a positive outcome from the electorate; the reports from the field were all calm and peaceful without any incidents. So, we had free and fair elections because no negative incidents were reported anywhere,” the judge disclosed.

On his part, Chief Etina Monono, whose list defeated two others in Fako Division, appreciated his peers for voting for his list. He promised to work with his peers both in Fako and across the region to ensure chiefs get the dignity they deserve.

He stressed that one key point of his mission will be to work on the government amending the 1977 chieftaincy law for the good of the people.

“…they should be room for chiefs to move from third class to second class and second class to first class chiefs, because a lot of our chiefs are third class chiefs and they are doing the work,” he said.

He continued that the amendments are needed to suit the current realities of Cameroon.

On his part, Humphrey Ekema Monono, who represented the party saluted the councilors for carrying out their responsibilities and obligations to the party.

He said the absences witnessed were caused by health and other challenges faced by some of the members of the Electoral College in the region.

He said the new look Regional Assembly will do more in terms of employment opportunities, developmental projects, better health and others. He encouraged them to examine themselves where they failed and improve during the next mandate.
