Results awaited as over 25,214 electors vote regional councillors.

Officials, participants after concertation

Actors are now looking forward to the composition of regional councils nationwide after municipal councillors cast their votes in all 58 divisional headquarters Sunday November 30.

Less than 48 hours to voting, the Deputy Director General of Elections at Elections Cameroon, ELECAM, Abdoulkarimou, disclosed that some 25,214 potential voters were expected to performed their civic duty in 207 polling stations.

He exchanged with stakeholders on Friday, November 28 in Yaounde. Abdoulkarimou stated that the meeting was aimed at intensifying the institution’s preparedness, with emphasises on transparency, procedural clarity, and the crucial role of election observers.

The meeting brought together representatives of the ministries of territorial administration, communication, external relations, local development, police and gendarmerie.

Abdoulkarimou used the meeting to stress on the importance of refreshing observers’ understanding of the voting process and ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections.

He also insisted on the need for “…neutral observers to tell us objectively what went well and what did not. Their reports help us improve our electoral system”.

He declared that: “We have just 207 polling stations compared to the 31,653 used during the presidential election”.

Abdoulkarimou added that: “So, materially, it is a minor election. But it is complex. It includes two electoral colleges and multiple voting systems”.

He explained that despite the relatively small electorate, the election of Regional Councillors demands precision and mastery of electoral law.

“We have been ready for a long time so that everything goes smoothly at the polling stations. The supervisory commissions have been well trained, especially on seat allocation, the majority system, and procedures in the event of a tie,” he stated.

He noted that given the small size of the traditional college, ties between two or more lists are possible.

Before yesterday’s voting, he noted that ELECAM had trained “… members of the regional commission on handling ties, calculating average age when required, and interpreting the law correctly. Whatever the situation, we are ready to provide appropriate answers”.

Abdoulkarimou also underscored that before the elections, ELECAM had engaged accredited national and international observers.

He explained that the law permits observers in the electoral process, provided they obtain accreditation from the Ministry of Territorial Administration and, for foreign observers, the Ministry of External Relation and journalists, on the other hand, to observe the polls.

The ELECAM official also updated actors on polling station organization, security protocols, vote counting procedures, and the transmission of results from local polling commissions to the regional supervisory commissions.
