At Education Day: UK, Cameroon celebrate strides, showcase study opportunities.

UK High Commissioner discussing with team from Open Dream

The United Kingdom, UK, and Cameroon have reviewed and celebrated the remarkable strides recorded in the education sector.

This was the crux of a day-long activity dubbed Education Day, held on Tuesday, November 18, at the residence of the UK High Commissioner in Yaounde.

It is held under the theme: “Connect, Collaborate and Celebrate”.

Officials said the Education Day was part of weeklong activities to mark the maiden edition of the British Week, to celebrate the partnership between the UK and Cameroon.

It brought together partners from higher institutions, secondary education and others from various teaching sectors.

Organisers said the theme reflects the shared commitment of both nations to progress across climate action, education, culture exchange and economic development.

Speaking on the occasion, the UK High Commissioner to Cameroon, H.E Matt Woods, hailed the cooperation between the UK and Cameroon. He said the event was to encourage English language teaching and opportunities to study in the UK.

Woods also added that talks at the Education Day centred on the transnational partnerships to study in the UK where Cameroonians can study partly in Cameroon and in the UK.

The UK High Commissioner said after the Education Day, which preceded an exhibition on climate change and wildlife, there are other activities like a cultural evening expected to have held yesterday November 19, with the highpoint to be the King’s birthday party tomorrow.

Enter British Language Country Director

Speaking earlier, the Country Director of the British Council to Cameroon, Caroline Ndifor, underscored the importance of the Education Day.

Ndifor said it was an avenue to discuss what has been done together in the area of teaching and to celebrate education, UK connection with all the alumni from education, culture, to internship.

“We are supporting Cameroonian English Language educators to train them on the use of Artificial Intelligence, AI, to train them on classroom practices to improve on their teaching skills,” Ndifor said.

Ndifor said they are also celebrating those who have benefitted from the UK education platform, and UK scholarships like the Commonwealth and the Chevening, which, she added, is the most prestigious UK scholarships.

She said beyond just celebrating those who offer UK qualifications, they also wanted to celebrate Cameroonian institutions that offer excellent academic qualifications.

Ndifor cited the St Mary Higher Institute, and the Yaounde International Business School, YIBS, which she said, provide world-class education.

Growing UK, British Council brand

Ndifor said the Education Day was also to connect the various partners to be able to speak to one another, find out what they are doing, connect and build partnerships.

This, Ndifor stressed, will continue to grow the UK brand and British Council brand in Cameroon.

Participants hail initiative

Some of the students from partner schools who attended the Education Day hailed the UK High Commission and the British Council for the initiative.

According to Semoni Precious from the Yaounde International Business School, YIBS, the Education Day was a transformative experience.

Semoni, who is currently reading accounting at the prestigious private higher institution, says she is also looking forward to studying in the UK.

“This program has been very much enlightening to me because they are teaching us the basics of connecting, collaborating and celebrating together. My experience so far is really amazing,” Semoni told reporters.

Another student, May Diobe Nkumbe, of Enko Education, saluted organisers and admitted learning a lot which has fuelled his interest to study in the UK.

Also, among the organisations present for exhibitions was the Non-Governmental Organisation, NGO, Open Dreams education.

According to a member, Cynthia Ebot Takang, the event was “an opportunity for Open Dreams to recruit many more bright minds and help link them to their undergraduate and graduate opportunities in the UK”.

Takang added that: “Our partnership with them has been invaluable over the years to help ease the study and visa process for our scholars”.
