Afriland First Bank, UBA dominate digital banking in Cameroon.

A study has revealed that leading financial institution, Afriland First Bank, and the Pan-African bank, United Bank for Africa, UBA, are leaders in digital banking in Cameroon.

The study made public recently covered the period of 2016 and 2025. 



The two banks, the report show, control 43.6 percent of the digital banking market with combine subscribers capped at 587,725.

The media intelligence study, further revealed that the pegging of Afriland First Bank and UBA when it comes to digital banking is more than that of 14 other commercial banks operating in Cameroon.

Reports hold that the study focused on the digital presence of commercial banks on networks such as; Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and X formerly Twitter. 

In the research work over the nine years period, details looked at were; presence on platforms, community size, growth rate, and strategies deployed.

Afriland First Bank, the report indicated, emerged top, aligning with its place as leader in the traditional banking market.

On all six platforms analyzed, Afriland First Bank is said to have been found to enjoy a market share of around 30% with over 300,000 followers. 

UBA bank was ranked second in this aspect with a social media community of 208,000 followers on the six platforms, representing a 20% market share.

The top five ranked banks when it comes to digital banking, the report indicated, is completed, in order of market control by SCB Bank which has a 9.7% market share.

Ecobank comes in third place with a presence on four of the six platforms with a 9.6% share. CCA Bank, which is present on all six platforms, the study found, has only a 7% share. 

The five banks, the report hold, account for 70.2% of the total digital community with 947,421 subscribers out of 1,349,113.

Media Intelligence which carried out the study noted that the Cameroonian banking sector has undergone a spectacular digital transformation. 

It noted that in 2016, barely 6% of banks had adopted social media in their communications. But in 2025, the institution indicated, that the adoption rate among banks is around 16%. 

Digital presence, it indicated, has today almost tripled (+166.7%) with 16 active platforms compared to 6 in 2016, while communities have literally exploded (+53,436%) from 2,520 to 1.35 million subscribers. 

Media Intelligence indicated that, the “evolution reveals a profound change in communication strategy, moving from a traditional approach to a massive and engaged digital presence”.

Going digital, the institution noted, “is no longer an option but a strategic imperative for all Cameroonian banks”.
