The Paramount Chief of Limbe, Fako division of the South West region, HRM Chief John Elufa Manga Williams, on Friday October 7 made a strong showing in Ulm, Germany during the inauguration of a central plaza named after King Rudolf Douala Manga Bell.

Chief John Manga Williams was among Cameroonian officials as well as Manga Bell’s descendants present at the event.

Manga Bell's great granddaughter and his other descendants, together with Chief Manga Williams, flew from Cameroon to Ulm, Germany to attend the ceremony.

The naming of the plaza after King Rudolf Douala Manga Bell comes 108 years after he was hanged in Douala by German authorities for "high treason". It is seen by some as an appeasement of sorts by the Germans for killing the king for resisting the occupation of the land of Duala people in 1910. It could also be seen as an acknowledgement of ills by Germany during its more than 40 years of colonial rule in Cameroon, which was also very brutal.

Speaking after the event, Chief John Manga Williams said: “I am here on behalf and at the invitation of His Royal Highness King Bell and by extension from the city of Ulm for the inauguration of a Square named after King Rudolf Douala Manga Bell”.

“On August 8, I was in Douala for the commemoration of the assassination of King Rudolf Douala Manga Bell and what he represents especially for the Sawa and people of Cameroon,” he said.
