At start of November session: Cavaye hails Biya’s re-election, strikes Tchiroma for instigating violence.

Hon Cavaye speaking during the opening session

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt Hon Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, has lauded incumbent President, Paul Biya, for emerging victorious in the October 12 presidential election.

He has chided the runner-up of the poll and candidate of the FSNC party, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, for instigating post-electoral violence in the country.

He made the declarations yesterday, while opening deliberations at the third ordinary session of the National Assembly for the 2025 legislative year.

Members of Government led by Prime Minister, Head of Government, Dr Chief Joseph Dion Ngute, and other important personalities and members of the diplomat corps attended the session.

After congratulating President Biya for emerging victorious in the presidential election, the veteran politician then noted with satisfaction the conduct of the election, which he said took place in a calm and peaceful atmosphere throughout the national territory, excerpt for a few cases of vandalism.

Biya honoured for guaranteeing liberty laws

Hon Cavaye to credited Biya for the liberty laws promulgated in Cameroon since 1990 which, he said, has enabled Cameroonians to freely express their opinions, create political parties and enjoy all other public liberties.

“The advent of multi-party politics in Cameroon is also credited to the same liberty laws and it is thanks to the multi-party platform, in particular, that several candidates have been running for elective positions during elections organised in Cameroon,” he said.

He added that the different political parties elected to the Senate, National Assembly, Regional and Municipal Councils in successive elections are eloquent proof of political pluralism in Cameroon.

Cavaye stressed that the October 12 presidential election was a “classic example of political pluralism and democracy in Cameroon”.

Cavaye strikes Tchiroma

Hon Cavaye, on behalf of the National Assembly, commended the various stakeholders in the electoral process, citing ELECAM, presidential candidates, the Constitutional Council and the entire people of Cameroon.

“I equally wish to salute the sense of fair play demonstrated by candidates who accepted defeat with dignity. What is more, they went on, in a true spirit of fair play, to congratulate the winner,” the Speaker stated.

Strikes Tchiroma

He used the opportunity to strike FSNC presidential candidate, Tchiroma Bakary, for instigating the post-election violence.

According to Cavaye, Tchiroma, whom the Constitutional Council gave a 35% of total votes, is to be blamed for the violence that resulted in the death of some Cameroonians including the brutal murder of their fellow MP, Hon Abe Michael of Donga Mantung West constituency.

“Unfortunately, after failing to win, one candidate called for civil disobedience by inciting Cameroonians, nay youths, to contest the election results, foment disorder and destroy private and public property-a situation that inadvertently resulted in loss of lives,” he stressed.

Despite the painful loss of lives and property, he saluted the professionalism of security and defence forces for maintaining peace and order.

CDU MPs staging pacific protest at National Assembly

Stakes of November session

As proceedings of the third ordinary session of 2025 commence, Cavaye said two key issues notably the swearing-in of the President-elect and adoption of State budget for 2026 financial year, will be at stake.

He then reiterated that the 2026 State budget will be the very first for President Biya’s new seven-year term under the Policy of “Great Hope”.

In addition, he emphasised that the 2026 State budget must be realistic and in conformity with the Head of State’s policy guidelines to enable him begin his new seven-year term with “great hope by fully meeting the aspirations of the people who renewed their confidence in him”.

It is worth noting that a minute of silence was observed in memory of slain MP from Donga-Mantung and others killed in post-election standoff.

CDU MPs denounce electoral frauds

At the end of the session, lawmakers of opposition Cameroon Democratic Union, CDU party, led by Hon Koupit Adamou, staged a pacific protest denouncing election irregularities during the presidential election.

The CDU MPs carried the flag of Cameroon and a banner bearing their denunciation.

“We refuse to remain silent in the face of a system that oppresses, divides and betrays the trust of the people,” partly read a portion of the message on the banner.

Stating that the CDU party, which is the voice of those who still believe that the country deserves better, the MPs demanded electoral justice, courageous and decisive actions, instead of promises or contempt for truth and peace.
