The King of Saudi Arabia, Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has congratulated Paul Biya on his re-election as President of Cameroon.

Biya, 92, was declared winner of the October 12 presidential election by the Constitutional Council on Monday, October 27.



The nonagenarian, who is currently the world’s oldest leader, and has been in power since 1982, secured 53.66% of the votes.

Following his re-election for an eighth consecutive mandate, King Salman, at the start of the week, sent a message of congratulations.

The message is contained in an official statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia via their verified X, (formerly Twitter) account on Monday. 

King Salman, in the statement, extended best wishes to President Biya in the new term accorded him by Cameroonians. 

“The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques wished the president [referring to Biya] continued success and the people of Cameroon steady progress and prosperity,” part of the statement said. 

The Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, His Royal Highness Mohammed Bin Salman, also sent a similar message to Biya.

It should be mentioned that Saudi Arabia is one of the countries that has congratulated Biya on his re-election. 

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, had earlier conveyed a congratulatory message to Biya.

According to an official statement, a copy of which The Guardian Post has seen, Russia committed to actively promote fruitful collaboration with Cameroon in the political, commercial, economic, cultural and humanitarian fields.

Strengthening ties with Cameroon

The King and Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia also seized the occasion to highlight the strong ties between Saudi Arabia and Cameroon.

According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, the Saudi Leaders stressed the importance of continued collaboration to support political, economic and social growth.

King Salman, reports said, noted the strong relations between Saudi Arabia and Cameroon. The leader also underlined Saudi Arabia’s commitment to deepening cooperation in all fields with the aim to promote development and regional stability.

“The Custodian of the two Holy Mosques also praised the distinguished relations between the two countries and their peoples, affirming the mutual commitment to strengthening and developing these ties in all fields,” the statement said. 

The crown prince of Saudi Arabia further underscored the need to strengthen collaboration. He encouraged joint efforts in trade, investment, education, and health programs.

According to the Khaleej Telegraph, the congratulations reflect Saudi Arabia’s wider strategy in Africa. Reports say Saudi Arabia is seeking to reinforce political stability, encourage economic partnership, and promote cultural exchanges.
