October 12 poll: Mass protests as results awaited today.

Protesters on security vehicle in Douala yesterday

Tension is heightening in several parts of the country, a few hours to the official proclamation of the results of the October 12 presidential election, by the Constitutional Council.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets in many towns and cities to condemn what they say is perceived foul play in the electoral process.

Most of the protesters denounced what they say is a ploy by the CPDM regime to steal the ‘victory’ of the self-proclaimed winner and candidate of the Cameroon National Salvation Front, FSNC, Issa Tchiroma Bakary.

The protesters say they are demanding the respect of the results, which they claim gave the FSNC candidate victory over President Biya of the CPDM.

They also voiced concerns over alleged irregularities in the vote counting process, which they said further raises questions about transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

The widespread protests follow calls for peaceful demonstrations, which Tchiroma made last Friday via the social media.

The former member of government, now Biya challenger, had urged Cameroonians at home and abroad to come out massively and peacefully yesterday, to protest the respect of their decision made through the ballot box.

“…I call on all Cameroonians to come out in massive numbers- in every city, every village, every neighbourhood across Cameroon, and throughout the diaspora. Let us raise our voices together in a peaceful march, to show the entire world that it is the people who choose their leader,” Tchiroma said on Friday.

“Let us remain united, dignified, and determined. Our strength lies in our numbers, in our discipline, and in our unshakable conviction that the future of Cameroon belongs to its children,” he added.

Protests in major towns

The demonstrations started in the economic capital, Douala. The first set of protesters were seen on the streets of the New Bell neighbourhood.

Here, hundreds had stormed the streets. Viral videos showed protesters climbing on the water canon of the National Gendarmerie. Videos also showed tear gas had been fired to disperse the crowd.

Other social media videos later showed protesters at the Texaco Aeroport area, Dakar, Nkoululu and many other neighbourhoods in the economic capital.

Report we gathered, which we could not independently confirm, indicates that at least four persons were reportedly killed in the course of the protests at the New Bell neighbourhood.

Aside Douala, thousands of protesters also stormed the streets of Bafang in Upper Nkam Division of the West Region, Kaï-Kaï, Kaélé, Ngong, Guirvidig-Moromin all in the Far North Region.

Protesters also stormed the streets of Meiganga in the Adamawa Region as well as Garoua in the North Region of the country.

Prior to yesterday’s demonstrations, peaceful protesters had last week, also stormed major towns in the three Northern Regions, to claim the ‘victory’ of Issa Tchiroma.

The demonstrations were in the towns of Ngaoundéré, in the Adamawa Region, Guider in Mayo Louti Division, Kaélé in Mayo Kani Division, and Mokolo in the Mayo Tsanaga Division, all of the Far North Region.

During last week’s demonstration in Garoua, a teacher of Arab Primary School, identified as Zouhaira, was killed at the Poumpoumre neighbourhood.

The post-election demonstrations were also recorded last week in parts of the capital city, Yaounde. The demonstrations were held in the Tsinga and Nkomkana neigbourhoods. Security forces however used tear gas to disrupt the protesters.
