Post-election protests: Council of traditional rulers condemns violence, calls for peace.

HRM Tsala Ndzomo Guy: President of traditional rulers’ council

The National Council of Traditional Rulers of Cameroon has condemned acts of violence and public disorder that followed the October 12 Presidential election.

In a statement signed by its National President, His Royal Majesty Tsala Ndzomo Guy, the Council noted that the voting process took place in calm.

According to the institution, the presidential election was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere, thanks to measures put in place by Elections Cameroon, ELECAM, and the responsible behaviour of the electorate.

The Council noted that several accredited observers had also confirmed the transparency and serenity of the electoral process, an attestation to its seamlessness.

Expressing concerns over the tensions that followed the poll, the Council called on citizens to preserve peace and await the official results which will be known in the days ahead.

“In view of the incidents and demonstrations observed in the aftermath of this election, following statements and publications announcing the victory of one candidate, suspicions of all kinds are being deliberately and constantly spread on social media with the aim of inciting a section of the population to take to the streets and set Cameroon ablaze,” the statement read.

The traditional rulers used the opportunity to reiterate their “firm and unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and national unity.”

The Council also urged all candidates, media professionals and social media users to strictly respect the laws governing the electoral process.

Turning its attention to candidates who contested at the polls, it urged them to show restraint and await the official proclamation of results by the Constitutional Council, which is the only body legally mandated to do so.

The Council’s call for calm is one of many as anticipation for the final results builds up. In a presser over the weekend, the Chairperson of the Electoral Board of ELECAM, Dr Enow Abrams Egbe, called on citizens to trust the transparency and inclusivity of the electoral process and the final output to be finalised by the various joint commissions.
