October poll: Safe Haven Foundation launches campaign to safeguard wellbeing of voters.

Dinayen Emilien: Founder of Safe Haven Foundation

Not-for-profit organisation, Safe Haven Foundation, has launched a nationwide campaign to safeguard the wellbeing and sanity of voters before, during and after the October 12 presidential election. Dubbed: “Wellbeing at the ballot campaign”, the initiative was launched in Yaounde, October 1.

According to the Founder of Safe Haven Foundation, Dinayen Emilien Bongdzeem, the aim of the campaign is to encourage all citizens, leaders, institutions, and communities to put mental health at the canter of electoral participation.

Dinayen underscored the underline message of the campaign, which was revealed was: Strong minds build stronger democracies. Through this campaign, the Safe Haven Foundation aims to challenge the silence around election related stress and trauma.

The Yaounde-based Foundation said it is also keen on providing spaces to manage fear, anxiety, misinformation, and advocate for elections that heal societies instead of hurting them.

The Foundation said this explains why it is launching the wellbeing at the ballot campaign that dares to ask what good is democracy if the people casting the votes are broken inside.

“Every election, we are told to protect our votes. But who reminds us to protect our minds? Behind the ballot boxes are citizens weighed down by anxiety, families divided by politics, and communities scarred by violence. Elections should never come at the cost of our peace of mind,” Dinayen said.

She added that: “Democracy is not only about votes counted. It is about lives preserved and minds protected. A peaceful nation begins with peaceful citizens. Wellbeing at the ballot is beyond a campaign. It is a call to defend the one thing elections cannot afford to destroy, our sanity”.

The campaign launched has generated tremendous interest, particularly among the young people. Many have praised the foundation for this initiative, describing it as bot crucial and timely a little over a week to the 2025 presidential election.
