The Executive President of the Cameroon Baptist Convention, CBC, Rev Dr Teke John Ekema, has called on Christians of Soppo Field to be purveyors of peace and reconciliation to ensure holistic development within the church.

Rev Dr Teke John Ekema made the call at the head office of the Soppo Field Council of Churches in Great Soppo, Buea, during his maiden visit as the head of the CBC.

Addressing Christians during his visit, Rev Dr Teke John said the goal was to share with the Christians of Soppo Field the vision and mission of the CBC and to remind them that they are brothers and sisters called to serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

He encouraged them to remember the mission of the CBC being to proclaim the gospel holistically in Cameroon and beyond in obedience to the Great Commission of the Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

“I want to see that we have a living fellowship of churches growing together in faith, strengthening one another in faith as led by the Holy Spirit,” he said.

Speaking to the press after the visit, the Executive President reiterated the need for peace and reconciliation as the panacea to the challenges facing the church.

“…my agenda as Executive President is one for peace and reconciliation: peace and holistic development because I want all of us to pursue peace and be one another’s keeper. If we pursue peace, many of our challenges can be easily resolved,” Rev Dr Teke noted.

Hundreds of Christians from across the different Associations and Churches that make up the Soppo Field Council of Churches welcomed the Executive President. The visit was marked by the presence of local administrative, political and traditional authorities of the area.

Calls for a return to core Baptist beliefs

Rev Dr Teke took the opportunity to urge Christians of Soppo Field to realign with the mission of the CBC, saying a lot is going on now with a lot of digressions, thus the need for Christians to be reminded of the unique beliefs and distinctive as Baptists.

“We should remain the Baptists that we are and uphold the Bible as the highest authority in matters of faith and practice, which is what will help us. The Bible that we have as our guide and we cannot afford to keep aside and do things our way. We must come together and go back to the basics,” he asserted.

He encouraged all to reread the CBC covenant to remind them of the values and promises they took in the presence of God and man upon baptism

On his part, CBC Soppo Field Pastor, Rev Ebai Douglas, said it was an honour to be the first Field that the Executive President decided to visit during the 2025 calendar year.

“It has been an honour for us CBC Christians of Soppo Field to host our Executive President as the first Field in 2025 in his first mandate,” Rev Ebai stated.

He promised that the Soppo Field Council of Churches would stand by the Executive President in prayers and any other way he desires.

“…his mantra of peace and holistic development is timely for the Cameroon Baptist Convention in this season and we are happy that God has brought a man like him who will ensure peace reigns within the CBC. We are behind him in prayers and any other dimension that warrants our support,” he added.
