African Basketball Championship: Expert reveals Lions earned continental respect despite loss to Angola.

Yves Tsala: Basketball analyst

Basketball analyst, Yves Tsala, has praised the country’s national basketball team, the Basketball Lions, for their performance in the recent match against Angola in the just ended African Basketball Championship.

According to him, the team has earned recognition across Africa despite their narrow loss to Angola.

Speaking in a recent interview, Tsala offered a detailed assessment of the match and the broader progress of Cameroonian basketball.

Tsala noted that Cameroon controlled much of the match, dominating in the first three quarters, but struggled in the fourth quarter, which ultimately allowed Angola to close the gap.

“The key was the management of the fourth quarter. We had the cards in hand to win the match, but we couldn’t find the fluidity in our play,” he said.

He explained that repeated turnovers at critical moments prevented Cameroon from securing the win. Despite the defeat, Tsala praised the team for their initial dominance and their ability to regain momentum in the third quarter.

Overall, Tsala described the Basketball Lions performance as impressive, especially given the challenges of playing against Angola at home.

“The young players showed great promise and competitive spirit,” he said.

He highlighted contributions from players such as Fernando and 21-year-old Yves Missi, noting that the squad contains a strong mix of youth and experience capable of forming the foundation of future teams.

Tsala also pointed out that the team’s progress reflects a broader return to prominence on the continental stage. Since 2009, Cameroon had not reached the final stages of major African competitions.

The performance, he said, demonstrates the emergence of a capable generation that could compete effectively in upcoming tournaments.

Highlighting the significance of the team’s performance, Tsala said, “Cameroon has won the respect of all of Africa”.

He noted that international observers and social media commentators have recognised the Lions improved quality and competitive spirit, affirming the team’s growing reputation.

Tsala also addressed refereeing, observing that officials face pressure and that decisions may not always satisfy all parties.

“The best referees are those who don’t influence the result but let the players decide the outcome,” he said, emphasising that the Lions’ focus should remain on their own execution.

According to Tsala, Cameroon’s performance provides a strong basis for the future.

He said the team’s young talent, combined with experience gained in high-level competitions, positions the Lions to build a more consistent and competitive squad for both African and international basketball tournaments in the years ahead.
