October presidential election: Elections DG, regional bosses brainstorm to stage hitch-free poll.

Dr Erik Essousse, collaborators after discussions

The Director General, DG of Elections Cameroon, ELECAM, Dr Erik Essousse and his ten collaborators from across the country have further brainstormed to organise hitch-free presidential election come October.

This was during a two-day meeting in Yaounde August 22 to 23.

Dr Essousse said ELECAM seeks to ensure its staff nationwide are on the same wavelength in terms of preparations for the election.

He said ELECAM is working day and night to put everything in place in order to “organise a proper, peaceful, transparent, impartial and objective election, as the law recommends”.

The meeting, he said, provided an opportunity to address challenges from the publication of the list of candidates, to the distribution of voters’ cards, material for polling stations at home and in the Diaspora.

Dr Erik Essousse said ELECAM has proven its worth in the past and is working to do even better.

Salutes work done so far

Dr Essousse during that meeting congratulated his collaborators and other electoral stakeholders for work done so far in the field.

He was particular about “…the agents who are on the ground day and night for the distribution of electoral cards” even in the face of difficulties.

He tasked them to redouble efforts to ensure the election is organised without hitches.

“We know that it is a heavy task, but we have to do all in our capacity to succeed...,” Dr Erik Essousse stated.

One of the participants, the Centre Regional Delegate of ELECAM, Essi Michele Arlette, said on the ground, work remains to be done especially the distribution of voters’ cards.

Essi also mentioned “…the transfer of electoral material on the ground and all other activities that will allow us to have a transparent, credible and balanced election…”.

The South West Regional Delegate of ELECAM, Zofoa Njoya Sake, stated that the meeting was very important.

“…you know, we are coming from an area where there is crisis and the security constraint,” he told The Guardian Post, restating ELECAM’s commitment to ensure the exercise “...will be peaceful, transparent and inclusive”.

Njoya said all has been put in place to secure polling stations for a free, fair and transparent election.

The North West Regional Delegate, Mbowoh Elvis, on his part, stated that “on the ground, our collaborators are on the field distributing voters’ cards”.

Joseph Manaoda of Far North Region noted that all has been done for a secured election. He said in his area, ELECAM is working hand-in-hand with the administration and security forces to ensure a hitch-free election.

Manaoda stated that the Region is facing some difficulties as a result of the rainy season in that part of the country.

“Access to flooded areas is difficult because there are rivers that are already flooded,” he said but said actions are being taken to address the challenges.
