Wi-Njuh, an association of women belonging to the Njuh women’s dance group from the Wimbum tribe in Donga Mantung Division of the North West Region, is set to hold its fourth national convention in Yaounde, on Saturday, January 25.

The convention is scheduled to take place at the St. Joseph Bilingual Nursery and Primary School Mvolye in the Yaounde III Subdivision, as from 10a.m.

The Yaounde convention, which will feature a fundraising, will hold under the theme: “The Wi-Njuh woman, promoting the Wimbum culture and empowering the rural woman and girl child”.

Over 1,000 members from the 13 chapters of the association across Cameroon, as well as high profile guests, are expected to attend the convention.

The National Coordinator of Wi-Njuh, Manjuh Bawe Helen, has launched a fervent appeal for all and sundry to support the association in the drive to reach out to women and girls back at home who are really in need.

Going by the Secretary No.2 in-charge of Communication in the Yaounde branch of Wi-Njuh, Fogwe Joyce, all is set for the event this weekend.

Fogwe said funds raised during the convention will be used to offer support to Queen Mothers, wives of the Fons and less privileged girl children in Mbum land who aspire to acquire education but do not have the means.

“…we also intend to assist some rural women who are really in difficulty because we have realised that the crisis [Anglophone crisis] has put many in situation of abject poverty and misery,” Fogwe told The Guardian Post.

Apart from the fundraising, there are a series of other activities that will unfold during the convention. These include educative talks on women and financial empowerment, women combatting the effects of climate change, reinforcing love among Njuh women, how to prevent/handle non-communicable diseases as well as personal hygiene.

The convention will equally feature the launch of a fabric for the association.

During the event, some dedicated Njuh members will be recognised by a traditional authority. There will also be the Njuh display, a dance performed especially when an elderly woman dies.

About Wi-Njuh

The association, being the brain child of the National President of the Wimbum Cultural Development Association, WICUDA, Apostle Fogwe Rogers, saw the light of day in August 2022, in Yaounde.

It is a platform where issues affecting the Wimbum woman in particular, and the entire community as a whole are being discussed. Membership into the association is reserved for all Wimbum women by birth and by marriage.

Wi-Njuh was created with the objective to rally all Wimbum women together to revamp and instill Wimbum cultural norms and values that are fast disappearing due to modernity.

It is also out to educate the Mbum woman on the importance of upholding certain Wimbum customs and traditions that are gradually being eliminated by contradictory religious beliefs.

The association also seeks to empower the Mbum woman and the girl child to be socio-economically and academically productive so as to be well inserted into society, especially during this era of digitalisation.

Also, it aims to restore the Njuh dance culture back home and recommit the rural woman to belong.
