Lionesses begin training ahead of WAFCON qualifiers.

Lionesses during training

The women’s national football team of Cameroon have begun preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON, qualifiers next month.

The Indomitable Lionesses face Algeria in the second-round qualifiers of the tournament. Cameroon is currently in camp at the FECAFOOT Technical Centre in Odza, Yaounde, finetuning strategies, prior to the match.

Lionesses head coach, Jean Baptiste Bisseck, called up 25 players. The list includes three goalkeepers, nine defenders, seven midfielders and six forwards.

Among those retained for training are Cathy Biya, Asonyu Shey glory, Manbolamo Bodolo, Ngono Victoire, Charlene Meyong, Brigitte Omboudou, Bella Rose and Tiwa Lys Fraiche, who finished top scorer of the Guiness Super League.

The camping at the FECAFOOT Technical Centre in Odza started on August 15 and is expected to wrap up on August 25.

It was revealed during training that 25 selected players and members of the technical staff are expected to develop and work on technical, tactical and physical aspects of their game.

The head coach will also be looking to monitor the progress of the players to make certain key decisions in selecting his final squad for the Algeria clash.

The Indomitable Lionesses are poised to secure a win against their Algerian counterparts in October to make a return to the WAFCON. The team is hoping to redeem themselves after missing out from the 2025 WAFCON for the first time since 1991.

The setback cost captain Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene and her teammates a place at the 2924 Paris Olympic Games in France.

The team had shown signs of revival in April when they narrowly edged Morocco 1-0 in an international friendly. It was the first official match of the team in over one year.

The team played another high-profile friendly against eternal rivals Nigeria. Although they lost 2-0 to the Super Falcons at the MKO Abiola Stadium, the team put up a spirited display.

The women’s national team is hoping to re-establish its dominance on the continental scene. The four-time WAFCON runner-up recently slipped two places on the FIFA Women’s World rankings. The team’s target this year is to qualify for the WAFCON next year scheduled to take place in Morocco.
