North West Region elite have announced a scheme to support some Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, of the Anglophone crisis resident in Yaounde; to cope with the recent City Council ban on those doing roadside business in some strategic areas of the capital city.

The Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Cooperation with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu, announced the initiative Tuesday, January 14.

In a note, Mbayu said the initiative comes in the wake of the decision from the City Mayor of Yaounde, Luc Messi Atangana, banning sale of goods through mobile shops.

Mbayu said they had consulted Senator Regina Mundi, interim leader of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM party, in the North West Region, before unveiling the scheme.

With the ban to go into effect beginning January 20, Mbayu noted that it will affect the source of livelihood of IDPs from the North West Region resident and doing roadside business in Yaounde.

Through the initiative, he said North West elite want to promote a positive image of their people, ensure IDPs overcome the challenges they face, demonstrate continuous readiness of always support their people and support the maintenance of peace and order. He said the elite are ready to provide alternative spaces for the IDPs to continue their businesses.

He disclosed that the officials have agreed to provide 50 stalls to IDPs from the North West Region, for a monthly rent of 5,000 FCFA. Mbayu said the amount needed to pay the rent is 3,000,000 FCFA.

The member of government said North West elite will cover the cost of the stalls. He said the money will be taken from what was left of another initiative to succor Anglophone crisis IDPs in Foumban, Noun Division of the West Region.

With the possibility of getting 100 stands for IDPs, Minister Mbayu said a committee has been put in place to compile a list of potential beneficiaries and detail criteria for allocation. He restated that the elite are still open to support from other persons of goodwill to boost the initiative.
