Rev Father Justin Georges Ebengue

Pope Francis has appointed Rev Father Justin Georges Ebengue as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Yokadouma in the East Region. The news is contained in a release signed recently by the Holy See.

Before his appointment, the prelate has since 2023 been Rector of the Notre-Dame de l'Espérance inter-diocesan major seminary in Bertoua where he oversaw the training of future priests which further strengthen his leadership credentials.

His work at the seminary, where he mentored seminarians in their intellectual and spiritual development, has made him well-known within ecclesiastical circles in Cameroon and beyond.

Born on May 18, 1970, in Cameroon, Rev Father Ebengue is a member of the Batouri clergy and has dedicated his life to the service of the Catholic Church.

He was ordained as a priest on February 18, 2006, for the Diocese of Batouri. Over the years, he has gained a reputation for his profound theological knowledge, administrative acumen, and commitment to pastoral care.

Rev Ebengue’s training as a priest is rooted in both local and international education. He attended the Saint Jean-Baptiste preparatory seminary in Doumé, followed by the Grand Séminaire Interdiocésain Notre-Dame de l'Espérance in Bertoua, where he studied philosophy and theology.

His academic pursuits later earned him a licentiate in canon law from the prestigious University of Paris I. This further sharpened his understanding of the legal aspects of Church governance.

Before his appointment as Bishop, Rev Ebengue held a number of important positions within the Diocese of Batouri. His extensive pastoral experience includes roles as Parish Vicar, and Rector of the Petit Séminaire de Doumé.

He also served as Chancellor of the Diocese of Doumé-Abong Mbang and Diocesan Pastoral and Catechetical Officer. In addition, Rev Ebengue was Diocesan Administrator of Batouri from 2017 to 2018.

His tenure as Rector of Batouri Cathedral further exemplified his ability to guide and strengthen his community.

He served as Chaplain of Collège Catholique de Bary and participated in several important diocesan councils, including the College of Consultants, the Presbyteral Council, and the Economic Affairs Council, positions which allowed him to influence diocesan policy, shape its spiritual direction, and ensure that the local Church operated smoothly and efficiently.
